The Land of Milk and Honey-
Gone Berserk
This article is the first in a
new series. The International
Relations Club members plan
to keep the GUILFORDIAN
supplied with articles of an
International flavor, in the
up-coming weeks,
by Ante Rosa
Recoiless rifles, heavy
mortars, tracer bullets, Rus

Libyan snipers, armed ele
ments, flying roadblocks, light
artillery and detonation de
vices. All common jargon,
terms which reoccur profusely
in any amiable chat, as long as
Beirut, Lebanon, is your
stomping ground. The land of
milk and honey gone berserk.
The world is already sweeping
this tiny country under the
rug; a rather unfortunate bit of
business in the not so
languishing Arab lands.
Jesus Christ spend most of
His life in Southern Lebanon.
You can water ski and snow
ski hours apart in Lebanon. In
the near future Paris and
Switzerland are inevitably
going to be heralded as the
Beirut and the Lebanon of
Europe.
It was my intention of
wholly immersing myself in
this land of exotica with frills.
I was going to major in magic
at the American University of
Beirut, a flowery orchid of a
campus tumbling into the sea.
The sheer fragrance of the
culture provided enough
exciting stimuli to keep your
well-being hanging around the
ozone layer. What happened?
A pressure cooker is a feeble
metaphor to describe it. The
areas of conflict are distin
guished as being indistin
guishable. Christians vs.

Moslems, rich vs. poor,

all the faction groups with
their splinter groups and
clarity loss out in a big way. If
you go digging way below the
roots of the problem, you
arrive at the sheer basics.
Testosterone poisoning. The
even needed hormone in the
male gender. It has dual
purposes arriving at a
common goal after so many
years of evolutionary perfec
tion. One, it sets a man on
burning, lustful passion, thus
ensuring procreation. And.m
second it sets a man on
burning, aggressive passion,
thus ensuring stabilization of
human populations. The blood
flowing in the streets of Beirut
is simply the manifestation of
the male populace being
enslaved by such an all
destructive and desirable
hormone. Why so intensified
here? Well, the sexes have a
rift between them. Traditional
roles of appreciating each
other haven't been quite
cohesive enough. The more
isolated the male gets the less
adept and sensitive he
becomes in relating to the
female. The female, in turn
proceeds to harbour propor
tional rises in resentment to
her non treatment. The male
finds himself increasingly
isolated. The rift widens. The
average male of age is
eventually a ravaged animal of
exaltation. He needs release.
Guns. The agression finds the
next most familiar and
effective channels of dissipa
tion. Violence. I left the
country with a heavy heart.

David Watkins, a young
pianist who has been an
Eastern Music Festival faculty
member for the past four
summers, will be presented in
recital by Guilford College at
7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2.
The public is invited without
admission charge to hear
Watkins, a former student of
EMF favorite Veronica Joc
hum van Moltke. The program
will be in the choir room of
Dana Auditorium.
Watkins, 26, will open his
program with Adagio in D
minor by Baldassare Galuppi,
an Italian composer who lived
from 1706 to 1785 J.S. Bach's
Fantasie in C minor will
follow.
The Atlanta native then will
perform the Beethoven Sonata
in F minor, Op. 57
(Appassionato). After inter
mission he will complete the
program with Chopin's Bar
carolle, Op. 60, and Sonata for
Piano, written in 1952 by the
Brazilian composer Alberto
Ginastera, who is still living.
Cancer is not fair. It can
strike anyone. However, the
cancer that can only strike
women, cervical cancer, is
one of the most curable can
cers of all. If it's detected
early and treated promptly.
There is a simple test that
can determine if you have
cervical cancer in its earliest
and most curable stage.
It's called the Pap test.
The Pap test is quick, easy,
painless and can help save
your life. Call your doctor
and make an appointment
now.
Last year 8,000 women
died of one of the most cur
able cancers of all. And they
died needlessly. Because if
every woman had a Pap test
just once a year, cervical
cancer would no longer be a
major threat to women.

This is the most valuable thing
she learned from the Air
Force.
Ms. McCracken, raised in
the Guilford College com
munity, received a degree in
Biology from Guilford, in
1971. She went on to do
graduate work at the Univer
sity of Tennessee at Knoxville.
The job field was getting
smaller every day, and she
stopped at the Air Force
recruiter one day purely on
impulse.
It took her a long time to
reconcile her Quaker beliefs
with those of the military, and
after six months in training
she still had some doubts. But
her older beliefs were
strengthened and new ones
added by her time in the Air
Force, and she has no
hesitation now in urging
everyone to join.

Chapel Hill. So come on down

night! (And for all you sports
fans, you can go to the
basketball game first, then top
off the evening with music!)

Besides the benefits of
increase in self-confidence
and opportunity to travel all
over the world, the Air Force
has some other advantages.
The rate of pay is better than
most jobs, and the veteran
leaving the service has very
good chance of getting a job in
the government agencies.
If you are interested in
joining the Air Force, the
recruiters are listed in the
phone book. Ms. McCracken
suggested that women think
ing of joining up make a
special effort to talk to a
woman who is in their branch
of the military. A woman can
give a much clearer idea of the
opportunities available to
women than a man can.
