Page 8 QuakersDefeatMartiansß2-8 ] by Pat Townsend Well, the Guilfordian has a basketball article in again this week! And this week, again, we won! See what an improvement an article in the Guilfordian and a bass-drum player in the pep-band can make?! This past Saturday night the Quaker team won their second very close match as they squeaked by Mars Hill 82-81. (whew!) Everytime I looked up at the scoreboard it seemed that the Mars Hill gang had a 6 point edge over us...but at the half-time buzzer the board showed a 45-44 Quaker edge. The pep-band felt justified in performing a rousing rendi tion of "The Victors" as the Quaker team left the court, and repeated the salutation as the home team re-entered. Cheerleaders Dear Editor: The article "Cheerleaders Bemoan Lack of Spirit" which appeared in the Feb. 3, 1976 issue of the Guilfordian spurred some discussion about the present cheering squad among members of the college community. For the most part, the comments were rather critical, although a handful of people did compliment us on several points. Like all who are placed in the public's eye, the cheer leaders realize that they, will constantly be subject to criticism. Criticism is always welcome with an open mind because it enables us to see our faults, thus changes and improvements are possible. It must be clear that only justified criticism are wel come. By justified, we want to know why, when, where, who and what caused this flaw to appear. For example, which cheerleader is bringing shame upon the college through her inability to " even do a cartwheel?" And at what game did the girls "merely smile and clap" when the starting line-up was announc ed? At what point in the Elon game did we stop for "nearly one full minute of playing time" as was declared by a faithful fan who by chance brought a s 01 watch to the game. Meanwhile during the same period of 60 seconds, the "superhuman" Elon cheer leaders cheered "at least 3 or 4 cheers." If questions like the above could possibly be answered, perhaps the criti cisms will be thought of as The second half was more of the tension-packed playing as the Quakers took the lead only to rapidly lose it again. The foul shots were 'way off during the first half, but the players improved in accuracy as they went time and again to the charity line. Another thing that seemed to be 'way off through-out the game were the referee calls, and the fans protested vehemently! With 15 seconds left to go in the game, Jimmy De Weese of the Lions hit a 10 foot jumper to give his team the margin 81-80. The Mars Hill mascot, their version of a giant lion, swished his tail in glee at the 1 point lead, but the game was yet to be finished...with 5 scant seconds remaining, Gary Devlin attempted a 10 footer, and Elton Gross helped out to bucket one. Three seconds stood on the clock. No way, Lions! valid and not exagerated generalizations. A picture of the Guilford "rah-rahs" also accompanied "the above mentioned article. In case anyone is interested, the candid photograph was taken during a time out. It's been said that a picture can say 1,000 words. Well, what about all of the other words in the English language. The picture will obviously bring different words to mind depending on the relativity of the viewer to the picture. As cheerleaders we are describ ing the picture as portraying one cheerleader looking at the crowd, two cheerleaders discussing the band whether or not they will play this time out and the remaining cheerleader watching, with disbelief, the Elon cheerlead ers as they went out of turn again to do a cheer on the court. A major criticism . as is suggested by one viewer of the snap shot is that we do not face the crowd. Other minor defects of the squad are that we appear to chit-chat (is discussing the game or the next cheer chit-chat?) and "even sit down on the floor" when tired like other humans! First of all, during the football games, the cheerlea ders did face the crowd. The cheerleaders attempted to lead the cheer 4 or 5 times with the crowd before turning our backs to the crowd to try to put some spirit into the players. Usually we grew tired of the crowd staring at us as if we were idiots when they did not show their support by The Guilfordian Sam Kennedy led the scoring for the Quakers with 25 biggies, despite an injured shooting hand. Ray Branch also excelled - pulling down 9 rebounds and earning 22 points. The win pulled the Quakers' mark up to a 13-4 overall record, with a Carolinas Conference mark to 8-2. Yes, sports fans, the game was certainly full of exciting moments - the Mars Hill Coach threw a fit and was severly reprimanded, the Quaker cheerleaders, all five, executed perfect splits, and Derry Mace of the pep-band played a trombone solo. Oh, and we mustn't forget the good ol' ref - he just couldn't see eye to eye with the fans - no matter whose team they were rooting for. yelling. At the basketball games, the cheerleaders face the court because basketball is such a swift moving game. If strict attention is not paid to the game, the cheerleaders might end up doing a defensive cheer when Guilford was playing offensively. If this occured, of course we would be ridiculed for doing a cheer inappropriately. Another im portant fact to remember is that in the gym, Guilford fans sit on both sides of the court. It is for this reason we felt that the comment "the cheerlea ders do not face the crowd, therefore showing lack of spirit and concern," is unjust. Perhaps a seat behind the team's benches would be more suitable for those fans who so strongly desire to see the frontal views of the girls. Actually, isn't it more important to watch the game and have half the fans see our backs? As for the point concerning the rudeness and cattyness of the Elon cheerleaders, thank you for realizing that they were just that! The Elon cheerleaders seemed to be given heroic qualities because of their ability to continually cheery while we were put to shame because we perhaps were discussing the game, or taking a breather. As cheerleaders we feel that a good character is of greater value than a big mouth. It has been anonymously recorded that "When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; When health is lost, something is lost; When character is lost, all is lost!" We admit that our squad may not be able to perform for the fans like a three-ring circus, as do other squads but at least we are proud of our !#>•* : Gary Devlin goes for crucial jump shot • he missed, but Elton Gross tipped it in for Saturday's win. Photo by Enos ability to act in a courteous fashion, like civilized human beings. This article is being written because we do care about our squad, we want to improve. We are anxiously looking forward to tryouts this spring. It is our sincere hope that we have a better turn out this year than in previous years for cheerleaders. It must be realized that only 5 girls tried out last year which shows the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the students. Therefore, a spectacular performance can not be demanded by the students of the cheerleaders. Only with new talent can the act get cleaned up, and then the squad can be the crowds' true "leader of cheers" instead of acting like smiling, spectacles on the court. Guilford College Cheerleaders "Brian's Song" by Jim Beck The newly organized Guil ford College Fellowship of Christian Athletes will spon sor the movie Brian's Song Wednesday, February 11 in Dana Auditorium at 8:15. There will be no admission for the movie, but a free-will offering will be available for those who would like to donate for sending a needy high school athlete to camp. Also featured on the agenda is an Amos and Andy film to precede Brian's Song. Last Sunday the group met and selected Johnny Stewart as huddle leader and also planned activities to take place February 10, 1976 Intramurals in Full Swing by Frankye Boyles Team competition in intra mural basketball is now in full swing. Regular season play, which includes a total of 60 games, and play-offs will continue until spring break. Tournament pairings will depend on final regular season standing. All teams from each league will play in the single elimination tournament. Fa culty men and women will not compete for the champion ship, but have challenged the champions to a fun game. In women's play, Faculty women remain undefeated. The much improved teams of Hobbs and Bryan are giving Shore and Binford a close race, with any team capable of winning on a given night. Men's league action has been very exciting. A basket at the buzzer gave George White-English a one-point victory over Milner 2nd North. Milner 3rd North defeated Day hops C in overtime. Lagnaf is currently leading the "C" league standings. Heaven's Seven leads "B" league. "A" league is having a close battle for first place with the Project Panther 3-0 and Dayhops A with a record of 2-0. Leading Scorers A league -- Smith, Hooks B league -- Hussey, Stokes Cleague -- Small, Paphites, Stewart Women - Conklin this semester. They have planned to spend a Saturday with young boys who are members of the Big Brother program sponsored by the YMCA. On this day they will divide into teams and compete in games, eat a hot dog supper, and end the day witfi a film. The FCA is hopeful that there will be a large turnout at the showing of Brian's Song on Wednesday and support of their activities. All athletes are invited to attend meetings each Sunday at eight o'clock in Founder's Lounge.
