Page 2 EDITORIAL Climb Your Ivy Covered Wall We are delighted to note that the A&T State University Mathematics Department is operating a free income tax service for low income residents and senior citizens of the Greensboro area. Initiated as a class project, this service annually assists several hundred persons. We applaud A&T's effort at community service and urge Guilford College to follow this fine example. Guilford possesses such an array of talents and resources, surely some of these could be used to benefit the Guilford College community in non-academic as well as academic pursuits. Faculty members should be encouraged to contribute more fully to the community. Dr. Bryden's work with Guilford County's environmental situation is an excellent illustration of community oriented action. We further feel it is the duty of the faculty and administration to stimulate community oriented class projects. The fields of Political Science, Education, Business, and others are ripe for such projects. The College and surrounding community both lose if we choose to hide behind our ivy-covered walls. D.A.G. Freemans Questioned Dear Editor, In reference to David and Kathy Freemans' letters of rebuttal to my article "The Land of Milk and Honey Gone Berserk", I have a few statements to make. Professional snipers in Beirut were paid lucrative salaries to instigate terror in the community, to the extent of slaughtering children in the streets. David tells me that hunger and political equality explains this. Kathy adds that I shouldn't discount the importance and influence of logic and intellectual endea vor. Thousands of innocent human lives have been cut down by blood lustful zealots. I dodged the bullets and eventually came up with the testosterone-machlsma causal effect theory. Does anyone have a cultural theory to explain war being synono mous with the male gender? Arne Rosa Sex? Dear Editor: In response to the letter writtep by David B. Freeman in the February 3rd edition of the Guilfordian concerning the role of testosterone in Lebanon's current civil war, 1 would like to say that Mr. Freeman is simply deluding himself. The function of an active sex life and other forms of personal contact with women in making men less irascible and infinitely more civilized can be most easily sene byway of contrast; in boys' schools prisons and other such instutitons in which said contact is usually prohibited. We are creatures of the body, and our bodies lead us to seek companionship in the opposite sex. It is one of our most noble preoccupations certainly going out and ripping people open for some ephemeral "movement" whose leaders will only become heads of an equally repressive class and sex-strat ified society in the event of their victory, achieved by the slaughter of human beings. Make love, not war....why not? Dan Hurley Elon Cheerleader Comments Dear Editors: As an Elon cheerleader, I was appalled by the behavior of the Quaker "Friends" at the recent Elon-Guilford basketball game. At the The Gollfordian IWI 1 | * i fir wir-f 4 1 ii \ f ii ■ Letters to the editor beginning of the game, Elon fans were shocked by the 100% inflationary rate on tickets. Then throughout the match a 50-year old plus i Quaker ringleader hurled insults and obscenities at the Elon crowd. In closing, as Captain of the lackadaisical Guilford cheerleading squad, Barb Dißoise should learn and practice the etiquette of cheerleading. If you can't go to college, go to? Bottom of the Flawless Pyramid of Nervous Pom-pom shakers Fan Bemoans Lack... Dear Editor, After reading the article "Cheerleaders Bemoan Lack or Spirit", I felt that I had to write this letter. Perhaps if the cheerleaders themselves would show a bit of spirit, the crowds would then do likewise. Even in the picture accompanying the article, one of the cheerleaders is not paying any attention whatso ever to the cheer and another one is turned around as if to talk to someone. One of my major criticisms of the cheerleaders is that they do. not seem to care. They chit-chat to each other even while doing cheers; some times one of them even sits on the floor. How can the crowd join in the cheers if the cheerleaders are facing the playing floor? They are there to do what their name specifically says - to lead cheers. The only way they can effectively do this is to face the crowd. I was at the Elon game and however rude or catty the Elon cheerleaders may have been, they still put the Guilford cheerleaders to shame. At least the Elon cheerleaders cheered. At one point in the game nearly one full minute of playing time went by without hearing a peep from our girls, while Elon did at least three or four cheers. Many times Guilford cheerleaders were seen standing around talking. Another criticism is the repertoire of the cheerleaders. February 10, 1976 Performers at Lunch The Guilford College Inter national Students Relations Club hosted the entire cast of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to its first annual "Welcome to America Bicentennial Lunch eon" at Founders Hall at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb ruary 10, 1976. "These students, from around the world, have extended this hand of friendship to these Circus performers as a jesture of good will," said Mrs. JoAnna Bennett, President and Mrs. Grims ley Hobbs of Guilford College have issued the invitation. Mayor Jim Melvin and his wife Susan were there along with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Oshust, Coliseum Director, Eugene Pidgeon, the former little Quaker of Guilford College and other civic leaders. They seem to know very few cheers. If they knew more, I have yet to see evidence of them. I am thinking of going out for cheerleading and I was told that I would have to spend three days a week practicing. I do not mean to be rude, but if our present cheerleaders spend that much time, it is not at all evident. When a college cheerleader cannot even do a cartwheel, it is a real shame. I have noticed that recently when the starting lineup is announced, the cheerleaders merely smile and clap. I have always been under the impression that something is done when each player's name is announced, even if it is something small, like a cartwheel. This letter was not written with malice in my heart, but in an effort to improve an integral part of any school. My biggest criticism, and one which I hope does not go unheeded, is that when the cheerleaders cheer, they do not face the crowd. If they want the crowd to follow in the cheers, they MUST face the crowd. When they face the playing floor, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to detect the cheer. I am not alone in these criticisms. Many people feel the same as I do. People enjoy cheering at games. But we need cheer leaders who act as though they care. 'Sincerelv.
