April 6, 1976 SATURDAY The HIGHWOODS STRING BAND is truly one of the best string bands in the world. They will perform an outdoor concert on Saturday afternoon between Milner and Bryan dorms. Their down home brand of music is guaranteed to keep you clapping and clogging all afternoon. The Highwoods String Band consists of Walt Koken and Bob Potts, fiddles, Mac Benford, banjo, Doug Dors chug, guitar and Jenny Cleland, bass. These five musicians, who come from all parts of the country and range in age from mid-twenties to mid-thirties, have spent many years learning and performing old time mountain music. In 1972, they joined forces and established their home base in the country arund Ithaca, N.Y. Since that time they have become respected as one of the finest and most entertain ing stringbands in America. The band has developed its own style which, while totally traditional, is a reflection of their attitude that old time music is alive and growing in the 1970'5. From the very outset the Highwoods Stringband has Meanwhile... During the outdoor activi ties there will be a number of other activities going on. The Crafts Center will sponsor a weaving exhibition. There will be people there to teach you how to weave and enough yarn for you to practice with. The folk dancing group from SUNDAY Sam will perform outside KEBK SMB A Spring Celebrationl OIRJUpBAUD been a travelling band. They have played clubs and concerts across the country, won numerous prizes at fiddler's conventions, and have appeared at most of the major folk festivals. For the past few years they have been giving college perfor mances as part of the Guilford college will be there to show you some of the dances they have been working on all year. We'll be giving away frisbees so that you can develop the dread condition' frisbee finger'. (There is absolutely no truth to the vicious rumor spread by The Guilfordian Smithsonian's touring per formance service. In 1974, the band was chosen to tour nine countries in Latin America for the State Department. The band has two records of their music available, Rounder 0023 and 0045, and can be heard on Mike Seeger's latest release. Mercury SRM-1-685. the campus commies that the frisbees will be N.C. State frisbees). The Recreation Committee will have a lot of crazy activities going on to match your crazy mood. Among these will be an egg toss (with the winner receiving a can of spot remover) a Karl Marx look alike contest, pie throwing contest and several other oddities. Just about the time the and last but not . least... The final event of Serendi pity Week will be a series of comedy shorts and cartoons. The fare includes Popeye, The Road runner, the Three Stooges (with the original Curley) Mr. Magoo, Franken stein and the Wolfman starring Boris Karloff, a newsreel from 1955, Inspector Clouseau. Bugs-Bunny, Char lie Chaplin, and the Pink Panther. This will be held in Stcrnberger at 8:15 on Sunday The critics have praised THE HIGHWOODS STRING BAND extensively. Picker magazine says: the intensity of the tunes conies alive with the magic that develops between these two fiddle players who play so well together." Their brand of music is not dry and academic but full of life and fun, perfect for a sunny Saturday after noon. The Highwoods will be playing between Bryan and Milner on April 10th as a part of Guilford's Serendipity celebration. Get ready to get rowdy. Performing with the High woods String Band will be the APPLE CHILL CLOGGERS. This is a group of eight doggers (four couples) who will perform all the traditional dances. Side from displaying their own skills they will help you learn some of your own. They will do a workshop and teach you some of the steps and formations of clogging. They're a lot of fun to watch and even more fun to join in with and dance. So put on your chip kickin' shoes and dance with the APPLE CHILL CLOGGERS. music ends Epicure will serve dinner outdoors be tween Milner and Bryan. It will be a pig pickin' with all the trimmings. From 6-9 will be party time. Make sure that you get good and primed for the dance later that night. The band is SMOKING from Norfolk. Va. They are a popular dance band who play regularly over a three state area. They are Page 5 and 9#i Craft Center Demos Saturday, April 10, in conjunction with the Annual Serendipity Week events, the Crafts Center will be sponsor ing an array of activities and demonstrations all day long. Demonstrations of such crafts as spinning, weaving, cera mics, and jewelry-making will be held. There will also be a workshop in natural dying, including a nature hike to collect materials. A commu nity "Weave-In" will be held all day long also in which weavers and non-weavers alike are invited to join in and help create a giant (4'xs') weaving. Finally, there will be an exhibit of works by both Crafts Center artists and Crafts Classes members. The day promises to be full, exciting and artsy, so come on out and weave, dye, spin, pot, or just look around. composed of two guitars, bass drums and two sets of keyboards along with great harmonies. They play a heavy rock and roll style of music with a strong sprinkling of soul and pop sounds. In other words they do it all. They will play for four hours from 9:00 to 1:00. The Union hopes the events of Serendipity Week will be fun for you and cap off the year's activities with a bang.
