Page 8 Dramatic Ra A&T Game 6-5 A light schedule for the Guilford College baseball team this past week did not make for dull games as the Quakers won two of the last weeks three games. On Monday the Quakers entertained cross-town rival North Carolina A&T. The Quakers were behind in the bottom of the ninth inning and were down to only one out when Barry Hussey singled to give the Quakers one man on. Randy Black then followed with another single to give the Quakers men on first and second. Ray Cooke who was pinch-hitting for Gary Rey nolds, singled to left field but the Aggies left fielder bobbled the ball and Hussey and Black both scored. Stan Smith then came on to save the day as he homered over the left field fence to give the Quakers an extra inning game and another chance to win the game. The win finally came in the 11th inning after the Quakers had loaded the bases and Charlie Kearns hit a single to right-center field to score Black and Baden Bright Spots for Quaker Diumondmen At this time last season the Guilford College base ball team was sitting on a 12-1 overall record. The Quakers lost only one player off of that team from last year so things should be the same. But they are not. The Quakers currently sit with a 9-10 overall record and Quaker head Coach Stuart Maynard knows the reason why. "We're leaving to many men stranded on the bases," states the head mentor. "We've got to start producing some runs out of our hits," continues Maynard, "I'm disappointed with our hit ling." "At the beginning of the year 1 was concerned with our BP Brace Baden Randy Black the winning run. On Friday the Quakers dropped their first conference game of the year 8-2 to Atlantic Christian College. Randy Black's lead off homer in the bottom of the first inning was just about all the Quakers had to cheer about as they couldn't seem to hit the ball. On Saturday the Quakers played Lenoir Rhyne College in what had to be one of the best ball games they have played all year. Randy Black again started off the game with a home run and that was all that Guilford really needed as they defeated the Bears 7-0. Chip Smith went the distance on the mound striking out 9 and allowing only 6 hits while hurling the Quakers first shut out of the year. Guilford faces four games this week with three of them being very important confer ence contest. Atlantic Christ ian on Monday, Catawba, on Wednesday, A&T on Friday and Elon on Sunday. pitching, but our pitching has been adequate this year so far, it's just that we're not hitting the ball and scoring runs." Gary Reynolds a transfer from Pembroke State has come on and is showing that he knows how to play some good baseball. Reynolds plays right field for the Quakers and has a good stick at the plate as well as a good solid arm in the outfield. Bobby Chamberlain former Greensboro Smith star who came to the Quakers from Mitchell Junior College has shown some good form pitching. The strong righty has a 1-3 record but his E.R.a. is 3.88. Barry Hussey has come on in recent games and helped boost the Quakers to a couple of wins. It was Hussey's hit in the bottom of the ninth inning that started the Quakers comeback rally for a 6-5 extra inning win over North Carolina A&T. Hussey who was injured last year is currently hitting .348 and adds a lot of enthusiasm and hustle to the team. But when you get right down to it the two big bright spots on the Quaker squad so far t-;is season are left fielder Bruce Baden and center fielder Randy Black. Baden is a junior from Th^nilfwdijn, mmm^gg§ %&* ~ . _-> i. / "• - ' *" !;.- *v^ Chip Smith hurled 7-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne. Upper Marlboro, Md. "Bruce is our most dependable player," states Maynard, "He is a very smart and heady ball player, he is a real fine defensive player." A .314 hitter last season, Bruce is currently hitting .271 and is leading the team in slugging percentage with a .400 average. Bruce leads the team in times at bat with 70 and runs batted in with 14. Along with Baden in the outfield is the player that pro scouts say is the best equipped young ball player we've seen in a long time. Randy Black the Quakers centerfielder has it all. Speed, strength, hitting ability and ball playing ability. "Randy does it all well," states Maynard. "He runs well, he hits well, he throws well, all the things the pros like in a good solid player," continues Maynard. And the scouts at every home ball game to see Randy Black. The Quaker junior from Thomasville, North Carolina, is currently hitting .312 which leads the team. Mr. Ail-Around baseball player Randy led the team in six different categories last year and is on his way to the same type feat this season. m Randy Black Black currently leads the team in most runs scored with 22, has four home runs and is 10-11 stealing bases. Black a left hander has been the lead off batter for the Quakers for the past three years and if he and the other players can begin making runs out of hits then the 1976 Guilford College baseball season may turn into a good year for the Quakers in baseball. April 6, 1976 Slide Show on World Economy A slide show reporting the impact of Multinational Con glomerates on the world economy will be shown in Founder's Gallery on Thurs day, April Bth at 3:00 p.m. During the Vietnam War the American Friends Service Committee established "Na tional Research on the Military Industrial Complex" to study the role of the major industries in the government's war program. At the end of the war the research was continued and was focused on the rapidly growing multina tional corporations. It has looked into the method of expantion into other nations, the use and control of foreign governments, the control of resources and markets, the use of native labor and the development of monoply controls. The research Findings will be presented in a 50 minute slideshow which will be interpreted by Miss Elaine Fuller, a member of the research staff from the AFSC National Office in Philadel phia. If the conglomerates con tinue to grow at their present rate it is estimated that they will control and administer one half of the worlds gross produce by the end of the century. Feeling Fishy?
