Page 8 Hampden-Sydney Downs Quakers BY DENNIS GRAY In the football season opener Saturday, our Quakers encountered a group of scrappy Tigers. It was close . . . very close, as Hampden-Sydney marched downfield to kick the winning field goal with one minute to play and recorded a 19-17 victory. The kick was a 45-yarder by Hampden- Sydney's Gary Garner. Garner proved to be a thorn in the Quakers' side all day, giving Hampden-Syndey a 3-0 lead with a 25-yard field goal in the first period. In the next series, Guilford's Reggie Kenan showed the opposing team what a thorn he can be. He hurdled linemen, spun away from tacklers and paced the Quaker attack downfield to the Tiger 14. Behind good blocking, he charged up the middle and found the end zone. Mike McClune added the extra point, and the Quakers led 7-3. It was not until the latter stages of the second period that Hampden-Sydney could retake the lead. The Tigers' Jon Daly connected with re ceiver Ben Newel.for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Garner's kick was good, and the Tigers led 10-7 at the half. Hampden-Sydney widened 0 A two-faced thanks and apology to the unknown per son who donated the article about last Saturday's football loss to Hampden-Sydney. In order to arouse interest in intramurals, the intramural committee has designed a point system to declare overall unit champions (men's and woman's) for the school year. Within the next few days, a plaque will be hung in Founders with each year's intramural champions en graved on it. If you haven't already signed up for soccer, then you'd better hurry! We need more players to make soccer a good part of our intramural program. Teams are being divided and play will get under way next week. In order to sign up, see Gib Furguson in Milner 146 or Mrs. Clark in the gym.
