Biophile, in order to continue the recycling program, wishes to invest in a trailer to be placed in the mainten ance yard and used for storage. No other storage space is available. They need a total of SSOO, of which they will take SIOO from their allotment of S3OO, borrow $l5O from the administration to be paid back with recycling money ($lO/ month); and the other $250 was requested from Senate. Senate agreed to supply $l5O and suggested that Biophile attempt to find another source or raise the other SIOO. 3. WQFS requested SSOO to pay the salary for their engineer 2nd semester. They ahd been under the impression last year that the engineer received SSOO a year rather than each semester. They must have this engineer in order to operate legally. Senate voted that no additional funds be granted to WQFS with the suggestion that they take the money from elsewhere in their previously allotted funds. A constitution was approved for the Guilford College Christian Fellowship. Constitu tions for the Men's Volley ball Club and the Swim Club were discussed. The Volley ball Club was asked to approach the athletic depart ment about the possibility of being accepted as an official varsity team. There was also some question about accepting the ocnstitution of a club open only to men. The constitution of the swim club is being resubmitted when more copies are made and Senators have a chance to review it. The Community Council needs two more student representatives. An ad hoc committee was formed to deal with a method for selecting these students. The Com munity Council was formed three years ago so that the Administrative Council would have some input from students and faculty. It "Represents the major constituencies of the campus, with the intent that the whole community will have an impact on college planning. Major planning recommendations are brought to the council, which meets bi-weekly." (from the Hand book) Peter Reichard expressed his concern over the function ing of Senate so far this year, he feels that it is functioning primarily as a "bank" and not dealing enough with prob lems more directly related to student life. OCT.ftT The meeting opened with a moment of silence. John Janney reviewed briefly the Trustee Retreat that he attend ed over fall break. The students who attended wiH be meeting to discuss it further and representatives will be asked to come to Senate and give further details. John called for an increased effort on the part of the Senate as a whole in response to criticism that the Senate has been too informal and unproductive. In the future meetings will follow a somewhat more rigid struc ture; the budget reports will be given at the end of the meeting and in greater detail to avoid redundant questioning; the agenda will be posted on the Senate door every Wednesday by 2:00. Senators were asked to pay more atten tion to activities and complaints of their consituents and bring more oncerns and proposals to Senate. In addition, plans are being considered for some sort of workshop or retreat for Senators to increase their awareness of their responsibility and the purpose of the Senate. Roll was called; Christie Fletcher, Jeff Wright, and Kathy Sebo were absent. Old Business In response to a need expressed by Senators at the last meeting involving constitu tions and their opportunity to review them, Amie Williams submitted a proposal that in the future any organization that wishes to submit a consti tution must have 30 copies in the Senate office one week before the meeting at which they want it approved. In addition any business or policy proposal (except Senate sub committee business or minor concerns) will also have to be presented in this manner. This is to make it possible for Senators to get the material the week before with their minutes so that they can be more prepared to discuss the business at hand. The proposal was passed. The ad hoc committee that formed to revise the proposal presented two weeks ago on the establishment, mainten ance, and abolition of organiza tions, reported its decisions. Changes in phrasing were made in the section dealing with abolition of organizations. The Senate approved the proposals of the committee. The revised policy will be for warded to SAC for approval. (Copies are available in the Senate office for those inter ested in further details.) November 2/19761 Dan Hurley has been investigating the possibilities of having a gynecologist avail able through the infirmary. This was discussed and he will take the issue to the Student Services Committee and conduct a survey to find out how much student interest there is on the matter. Peter Reichard presented the decision of the ad hoc commit tee that formed to decide how the two additional represent atives to Community Council should be chosen. The decision, which Senate approved, was to have the representatives be members of the Senate. It was felt that Senate members can rep resent a larger total constit uency as they are exposed through Senate to the concerns of the entire campus. Indiv iduals were asked to nominate themselves and voting was conducted by secret ballot. Peter Reichard and Leslie Zeldin were elected as the representatives to Community Council. Cathy Flick and Clara Heyder presented the constitution of the swim club for approval. The club has been given $750 ay the administration and will be a varsity team next year; but it wished to have club status for the rest of this year. The constitution was approved. Alex Intermaggio had sent a request to Senate that there be a clarification of the policy regarding reading days. Jim Newlin said that the policy has not been definite in the past and the decision was made from year to year. The Senate feels that reading day is needed and is sending the question before Community Council. It is hoped that a definite policy will be adopted making reading day a permanent part of the college calendar. New Business: The Young Democrats Club was granted S2OO as "seed" money. This is traditional for new organizations. Janice Mosher is going to chair a committee to organize a campus-wide boycott of the gas station being built across from the college gates. John Janney and the Senior Senators are going to meet and discuss forming a com mittee to make plans for graduation. Respectfully submitted, Amie Williams Secretary, Community Senate
