Page 8 Quakes Fall to Wildcats BY RANDY DUNBAR Turnovers continued to plague Guilford College as it dropped its third game in a row Saturday to Davidson College by a 27 - 6 margin. Even though the Quakers lost, Reggie Kenan continued to turn in his good perfomance. Kenan rushed for 125 yards on 16 attempts from his tail back position. Davidson hit pay dirt on its first possession, marching 70 yards in 15 plays with QB Bob McCarthy getting the TD from one yard out. The kick was blocked. Guilford came right back to knot things up with a 71 yard drive, the tally coming on a 35 yard pass from Stewart to tight end Dale Lee. Guilford missed a chance to take the lead when Mike McClune's kick sailed wide. After the Quakers' score, the Wildcats totally dominated the game. Halfback Pete Legler raced 48 yards to put Davidson ahead for good early in the second period. A McCarthy pass to Page Wally made up for the Wildcat's missed PAT earlier. Second half action saw a stubborn Quaker defense, led by noseguard Bunky James, keep Davidson bottled most of the half. Guilford put up a goal line stand to keep the Wildcats from scoring on one occasion. But the Guilford offense continued to have problems holding on to the ball. Davidson did manage to get one second half score on a six yard aerial from McCarthy to Wally. The kick failed to make the final score 27 - 6. The Quakers turned the ball over five times, with most of those killing good drives by the Quakers. Davidson out gained Guilford by 419 yards to 283. Another bright spot for the Quakers was the punting of sophomore Billy Thomas. Punting in his first game, Thomas booted the ball three times for an average of 52 yards. Guilford will travel to Winston-Salem next Saturday to face Winston-Salem State. Bobby Propster collected the lone Quaker tally with about 14 minutes remain ing. Guilford was more fortunate in their next match against UNC-G. The Quakers scored four first half goals enroute to a 9 - 0 whitewashing of the Spartans. Propster once again led the way for Guilford with two scores. The Quakers now begin the District 26 playoffs as the second seeded team. Belmont- Abbey will provide the opposition for Guilford in the first round.
