Page 8 Lady Quakers Victorious BY ALINA LEBRATO The Guilford College Women's basketball team began their season Friday December 3 by defeating Meredith College 49-36. For the team this was their first victory in a district game. There were numerous factors that contributed to the team's victory. The team showed a lot of enthusiasm and determination in their play. Coach Currie was pleased with the excellent leadership and ball handling skills of freshman guard Kathy Brittle. There was also the aggressive defensive play by Cyd Atkins, Donna Rogers, Wanda R. Barker and Nancy Smith. The team showed that they were determined to win. The game was close at the start of the game but then the Guilford team blew it open. With a couple of steals and a fastbreak, the team kept adding to the score and went into half time with a 21 point lead. The second half was very ragged. The Lady Quakers had some problems getting the offense started. They also had a large number of turn overs. Nonetheless, the women finished 13 points Quaker Basketball Record Drops to 2—4 BY JOHNNY MOORE The Guilford College basket ball team dropped ifs overall record this past week to 2-4 as they lost to Catawba College on Wednesday night 81-80 in Salisbury and then fell to Mars Hill College in the Cracker Box on Saturday night 87-85. The loss to the Catawba Indians on Wednesday night was the Carolinas conference opener for both teams and left the Quakers with an 0-1 mark in the Carolinas Conference race. On Wednesday night Catawba's Tommy Dennard blocked a shot by Paul Drechsler against the glass with four seconds left in the game to preserve an 81-80 win for the Indians. Neither team could gain a big lead during the game, with the largest margin being Catawba's 20-12 spread early in the first half. Guilford pulled to a 70-70 tie in the second half with 6:06 to go in the game as Gary Devlin hit a layup. With 3:32 to go in the game Guilford lost Elton Gross as he blocked ahead of the opposition. Coach Currie was very pleased with the first game showing and the well distributed scoring. She commented that the slow second half was probably due to fatigue on the part of the team since there were nine players able to play that night. There are only ten members on the squad. Coach Currie is looking forward to the season. She knows the team will look very good in a couple of games. This year's team has four returning players: junior Cyd Atkins, sophomore Wanda R. Barker, sophomore Ellen Quinn and sophomore Janet Falls. In addition, the team has two new junior transfers Donna Rogers and Debbie Tyson. The teams seesawed back and forth down the stretch of the game with the Quakers Sam Kennedy giving Guilford the lead 78-77 with 2:29 to go in the game. Henry Boyd's dunk shot a few seconds later put the Indians on top and Eric Harris' 15 foot jumper with 15 seconds to go in the game was the final tally of 81-80.
