Cuijfbrdian November 'Setzuan' Features Original Music BYDEANREGENOS Original music composed by Alexander Barker, a Guilford College staff member, will be featured tomorrow evening when the lights go up on the Revelers fall production of Bertolt Brecht's The Good Woman of Setzuan. The play with music will also mark the debut of Revelers shows in the new Sternberger Auditorium. Barker, a former Guilford student and now presently working with the Maintenance Department, is no newcomer to musical composition. Several years ago he wrote the music to another Brecht show, A Man's a Man. The play and Barker's music were very favorably received. According to director Donald Deagon, Alexander Barker has written some highly effective music for the present production. "Alex's work suits Brecht well. It is tuneful and emphasizes the lyrics." Deagon also indicated that Barker has been invaluable to the production process. "Barker has taken hold of the music end of the production and worked with the musicians a great deal. He has arranged and composed everything. It's been a great help to me." It is somewhat fitting that the new Sternberger facility be initiated with a Brecht pro duction. Both Brecht and Sternberger offer the possib ility of variety. With Barker's help, director Donald Deagon has added music to Brecht. With Sternberger's flexibility Deagon will stage his show complete with rear projections and other staging effects. Audience seating will also be unusual. This production will show Sternberger's flexibility. The Good Woman of Setzuan is a comedy with serious overtones, which is set in China. It will run through Sunday. Show time is 8:15 p.m. each evening. Reser vations should be made. All Guilford College students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge. John Chappell as Clarence Darrow BY DAVE OWENS John Chappell as "Clarence Darrow, Defender of the Damned," will be presented at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 17) in Dana Auditorium at Guilford Colelge. Individual tickets will be available at the door for the performance, sponsored by the Guilford College Arts Series. Chappell is remembered for his delightful portrayal of Mark Twain at Guilford three years ago. Critics have called his Clarence Darrow portrayal "an excpetional performance." He creates an illusion that Darrow is present in a living encounter. Darrow is the lawyer who saved the lives of Leopold and Loeb, defended John Scopes in the "Monkey Trial," bested Bryan in the Bible Belt and worked tirelessly against capital punishment, religious bigotry and racism. L R: Steve Pearsall, Robin Smith, Gina Rumfelt, Lilli Shacklett, Lisa Baker, and John Beeler rehearse a scene in "The Good Photo by Gears Woman of Setzuan." Guilford College Gas Station: State and County Disgrace BY GEORGE B. CAMPBELL The basic facts concerning the self-service gasoline station at Guilford College have not yet been presented to most of the citizens of Guilford County and North Carolina. Consequently, the purposes and objectives of many of our citizens are still not known, are misunderstood, or are not clearly understood by most people and that includes media. One of the three major objectives has received little or no attention or media coverage. That major objec tive concerns the State Depart ment of Transporation. Simply stated, the three pri mary objectives which rightfully aroused citizen protest and concern in this matter are as follows: 1. Citizen opposition to County statutes, ordinances and policies which permit the County Commissioners, Planning Board and Planning Department (or any other department or board) to make arbitrary and irrespon sible decisions which pro foundly affect public health, education, safety and welfare without public notice and hearings. 2. Citizen opposition to State laws or policies {or lack of understanding) that permit the Department of Transportation to: a. Deed public property to others without public notice and hearings. In the Guilford College case, approximately three fourths of the land now owned by Williams Oil Company was deeded or given to the sellers plus $5,000 cash by the Dep artment of Transportation without public notice or hearings. b. Abandon road rights of-way without public notice or hearings. c. Plan and construct roads and issue driveway permits which do not take into account or more fully consider public safety and welfare. 3. Citizen opposition to business interests (Williams Oil Company in this instance) which disregard public safety and welfare, citizen attitudes and concerns, and demon strate an unwillingness to fully discuss the matter at the bargaining table with appropriate governmental and citizen representatives.
