Quaker Basketball
Update
BY JOHNNY MOORE
Elon College, N.C. . . . The
Guilford College basketball
team put on a great perfor
mance of basketball for one
half of Saturday night
against Elon College and
then showed the fans how you
could hold on to that lead
and win a ball game.
Guilford defeated Elon for
the second time this season
100-98, but not after the
Quakers and Fighting
Christians had to go into over
time to decide the game.
The Quakers, who had taken
an earlier win from the
Fighting Christians 105-100 in
overtime came out as if they
had instructions to run Elon
off the court. The Quakers
jumped out to an eleven point
lead with 11:36 to go in the
first half as Elton Gross hit
a 10 foot jumper to make the
score 30-19.
Big "E," then extended the
lead to 15 with 6:51 to go as
he hit another 10 footer from
the comer to make the score
44-29. Sam Kennedy and
Paul Drechsler working very
hard under the boards tapped
a ball in with one second to
go in the half, to give Guilford
their largest lead of the game
18 points, 61-43.
But as many people know
it is very hard sometimes to

hold on to a lead of that
proportion on an opponent's
homecourt.
"I reminded the team at
half time that big leads like
the one we had can disappear,"
stated Guilford coach Jack
Jensen.
Houdini came back out in
the second half for the Fighting
Christians dressed as Elon
head coach Bill Miller and
quickly performed a disappear
ing act on the Quakers large
lead.
With 6:45 to go in the game
Chris Matthews hit a 10 foot
jumper for the Fighting
Christians and cut the lead to
seven at 81-74. With 1:55
to go, Larry Scott hit a 15
foot bomber to pull Elon to
within two points at 90-88.
Elon finally tied the game up
at 90 apiece with 1:10 to go
in the regulation game as
Larry Williamson hit a follow
shot. Steve Rosenberry hit on
a drive with :55 seconds left
to give Guilford the lead at
92-90.
After an Elon timeout blond
haired Duke Madsen hit a
15 foot jumper to make the
score 92-92 with :30 seconds
to go.
Guilford had one chance at
victory, but Rosenberr/s pass
to Elton Gross along the base-

line was just out of the
reach of the big Quaker and
Elon then had the chance at
victory with :08 seconds to go.
The Fighting Christians try
came up short and the score
remained 92-92, the same
score as the earlier game when
the two schools went into
overtime.
Neither team seemed to
really want to score in the
overtime period as only four
points were scored in the first
three and one-half minutes of
the overtime period.
With 1:34 to go in the over
time period Gary Devlin who
led all scorers with 29 points,
hit an 18 foot jumper from
the top of the key to give
Guilford the lead 96-94.
Then with 1:03 to go in the
game Steve Rosenberry was
fouled and went to the line
to shoot one-and-one. But
before he could shoot Elon
coach Bill Miller was about to
pull out his bag of tricks;
first he called time out to lay
out some strategy and also
give Rosenberry some time
to think about the upcoming
shots. Then just as the teams
had returned to the floor, Elon
guard Duke Madsen realized
that his contact lense was not
on his eye but had fallen onto
his face very nicely. After a
few minutes of looking for his
eye problem and trying to
shake up Rosenberry, Madsen
finally returned with his eye in
place and Rosenberry still with
a one-on-one situation.
Mr. Rosenberry stepped up
to the line very calmly and
sank both free throws to give
Guilford a four point lead 98-94.
Gary Devlin hit a layup with
:39 seconds to go to give
Guilford a 100-96 lead.
The win gives the Quakers
a 12-10 overall mark and a
6-3 mark in the Carolinas Con-

Those of you that have ever

Quakers will also participate in

Campbell, Erskine and William

"We are excited about our
schedule and feel it is the most
ambitious ever played by a
Carolinas Conference soccer
team," commented Quaker
coach Ray Allwy. "We hope
that the schedule will prepare
us for our conference schedule
and for the post-season play
