Page 8 Baseball Team in First Place The Guilford College Base ball team won two very im portant Carolinas Conference contests this past week and took an early lead in the race for the Carolinas Conference 1977 regular season crown. With a 2-0 record in the con ference the Quakers also ran their overall record to 9-6. The two conference wins were not easy for the Quakers, as they had to go into extra innings in both con tests. On Tuesday the Quakers went 14 innings with Catawba College before they were able to pull it out 4-3. The win came as Gary Reynolds led off the bottom of the 14th with a single and then Bruce Baden came to bat and hit a double to drive in Reynolds for the winning run. Jerry Broome was the starting pitcher for the Quakers and went nine innings before May nard pulled him for reliever Brad Haines. Haines went three innings for the Quakers before being replaced with Andy Howerton. Down 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Quakers rallied for three runs to go into extra innings. The Bulldogs rallied for four runs in the top of the tenth to go ahead 10-6. Still, Guilford did not give up. With the score 10-9 and Pella Stokes on third and Jeff Kirtz on first Gary Reynolds hit a 1 -0 pitch into the trees behind the 360 sign on the Quaker fence to give Guilford a 12-10 win. The next day against St. Lawrence the Quakers just couldn't get things going as they fell to the Saints 9-7. After trailing 9-0, the Quakers tried to jump back on top as they picked up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth. Marty Block homered to start things off in the eighth but the Quaker miracle could not happen for a third day. Although Guilford had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth they still lost the contest. The Guilfordian On Friday the Quakers fell to the Hornets of Lynchburg College 11-1. The Quakers only run came after Pella Stokes had led off the sixth inning with a double and then was scored after advancing to third on a sacrifice fly by Gary Reynolds. The Quakers go on the road for a couple of games this week as they face Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, N. C. on Monday and then return home for a game with Davidson on Tuesday at 3:00. Guilford will travel into eastern North Carolina on the weekend as they play at Atlantic Christian on Friday and at Pembroke State on Saturday. Intramural Basketball The intramural . basketball play-offs are finally here so Softball can soon start. Ten men's teams were remaining in the single-elimination tourn ament as of the past weekend while five women's teams battle for their championship. The championship games will be played next Monday night. Playoff pairings are posted in Founders and the bulletin board in the gym. At the end of the regular season, there were only two undefeated teams Bryan Women and Milner 2nd North B. Four men's teams lost only once. The most points scored in a single game by one individual was 51 points, by Dent Hardin of Milner Ist North. Reggie Kenan scored 42 ponts in a game, as his team "The Ghetto," scored 100 points. Several games were won by last-second shots. Intramural Softball Intramural softball will start next week after basketball is out of the way. However ! there are not enough people I signed up from any unit to I guarantee a team from that unit. Be sure to sign up in the cafeteria this week. There will be an important organizational meeting for all those interested in playing field hockey this coming fall. The meeting will be Wednes day, March 30, at 1:30 in the Doake Room of the gym. Attendance is important if there is to be a team next year. Quaker Tennis Both the Guilford College men and women's tennis teams ended this past week on high notes as the men de feated Elon College 6-3, and the women's squad defeated Catawba 8-1. The men's team under the direction of Ray Alley have now won seven straight matches and have a 9-7 over all mark on the year. This past week they won four matches and only lost six total games in the four. On Monday the Quakers de feated the University of Pitts burgh 8-1, on Thursday they defeated Greensboro College 8-1 and on Friday they repeated the 8-1 score, this time over St. Lawrence. The Saturday morning win over Elon was a revenge win after the fighting Christians had beaten the Quakers earlier this year. This coming week the Quakers will face Pfeiffer Col lege on Tuesday at Pfeiffer, then on Wednesday they have a match with East Carolina University at Guilford. Next Monday Guilford will face Lenoir Rhyne at home. The Guilford College Women's team got things under way this past week as they defeated UNC-Charlotte 9-0, lost to Salem 5-4 and then defeated Catawba College 8-1 on Saturday. The women's team is led by Carolinas Conference defending single's champion Mary Kittridge. Kittridge stands undefeated at this point in singles play. The 1977 team, coached by Gayle Currie, is made up of Lynn Davies, Kelly Erickson, Jean Roueche, Ellen Cohen and Corinne Arndt along with Cyd Atkins. The women's next match is against Methodist College at home at 2:00 on thursday. March 29,1977 One-on-One Contest The basketball one-on-one contest will wind up this week with the semifinals and finals being played Wednes day afternoon. The four re maining men are defending champion Greg Small, Reggie Kenan, Dave Curry, and Morris Mc Arthur. I Ml' Sam Kennedy in action Senior Named Guilford College senior Sam Kennedy has been named to the NAIA third team All- American team, it was an nounced from the NAIA head quarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Kennedy, a 6-5 forward from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, led the Quakers in scoring the past two years, averaging 22.6 points this past season. Besides being named to the third team Ail-American Ken nedy was also named Car olinas Conference team, and All-NAIA Disrict No. 26 squad.
