Following a decisive victory over Pembroke State last Saturday night, Guilford's overall record is 14-7 and its Carolina Conference record is 6-4. The Quakers are in second place in the conference behind Pfeiffer College. In addition, Guilford College has dropped six of the last nine games. As a result of Guilford's win over Pembroke State, 95-63, Women Fall to 3-7 By NANCY SMITH The lady Quakers face a tough conference schedule this week, with games at High Point, Catawba and Saturday's doubleheader against Pembroke. Tuesday, the Quakers fell to nearby rival High Point 86-54. 6'o" center. Donna Rogers managed 14 points and 15 rebounds in the losing effort. Senior forward Cyd Atkins led the Quaker scor ing with 15 points. Wednesday, the Lady Quakers dropped another conference game losing to the Catawba Indians 73-66. Although the Quakers led throughout the game, careless errors caught up with them in the second half, as Catawba took the lead to stay. Co captains Cyd Atkins and Donna Rogers scored 25 and 23 points, respectively, with Rogers claiming 15 rebounds and Atkins 11. The Quakers' second leading scorer, 5'9" Julie Randle and point guard Gayle Culler, both suffered injuries and will miss several games. After leading for much of Saturday night's game, the Lady Quakers succumbed to Pembroke 58-46. Leading the Quakers in scoring was senior, Donna Rogers, with 18 points and Cyd Atkins and sophomore Jeannie Meisky with 10 each. This week's action lowers the Lady Quakers to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference. Next week's games are Tuesday at Greensboro College, Thursday, home against Meredith College and Saturday at Gardner- Webb. the Quakers ended a four game losing streak. In addi tion, coach Jack Jensen opted to make several strategical changes in the contest which contributed to the victory. Guard Steve Rosenberry started only his second contest in Guilford uniform. Playing in perhaps his best game this season, the 6'3" guard sparked the Quakers with 16 points, hitting 8 of 12 shots. • Rosenberry directed the offense from the point guard position instead of Gary Devlin. Rosenberry played the role in fine fashion with six assists. Also, the strategical move freed Gary Devlin to shoot a Quaker season-high, 34 points. • Jensen employed a three guard offense consisting of Rosenberry, Devlin, and Sporty Jeralds. As a result, the threesome responded by hitting 60 points, almost two thirds of the Quakers total output. The three guards also combined to convert 30 of 46 shots. Jeralds also did a fine job under the boards, grabbing ten rebounds. • Jensen instructed his team to use a "diamond-in-one" defense in order to contain Pembroke's fine forward, [A •JL...' v Mgi WEL w sfl| w * mEWt WE "' Photo by Walter Sonnenfeldt Cyd Atkins was one of the Lady Quakers leading scorers against Pembroke State as she scored 10 points. February 7,1978 Lenwood Graham. The defense consisted of Rosen berry playing one-on-one with Graham with the remain four players playing in zone positions. The move payed off as Graham was allowed only ten shots, with six going in the basket. • Elton Gross played the pivot position for most of the game instead of Greg Hopson or Bill Meyler. However, Hopson received playing time in the second half. The 6'B" center dominated the boards while in the game, grabbing eight rebounds. Hopson also scored six points including an awesome slam dunk which left Guilford fans on their feet. Forward Mike Cherry continued his consistently excellent play by grabbing a game high twelve rebounds as well as score 19 points. Overall, the Quakers out rebounded Pembroke, 48-30. Guilford raced out to a 17-point lead after halftime and maintained at least an eleven point cushion through out the remainder of the game. The Quakers hit 55.7 percent of its shots from the field compared to Pembroke's 42.9 percent.
