April 4. 1979 John Hall exudes "Power" Album Review-John Hall "Power" By Gwen Bikis John Hall is neither Daryl Hall nor John Oates; he is the lead guitarist of Orleans (who brought you such hit singles as "Still the One," and "Dance with Me"), now out with this solo album. I would buy this record, almost without hesitation; and that indicates soemthing about the music John Hall makes, improverished and cheap per son that I am. "Power" has all sorts of little bonuses, like Jon Pousette-Dart and John Troy of the Pousette-Dart Band, as well as Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor, on background vocals. John Hall is known for his guitar work, he deserves equal recognition for his resonant vocals and his writing. All of the songs on "Power" are origi nals: most are strong, and none could be called really weak. "Home At Last," the lead cut on the first side, is an inspira UPCOMING LONGPLAYERS WED. IF YOU FEEL THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED, WHY DONT YOU SEND YOUR tional love song aiming for the Top 40. It would make as nice a single as anything Orleans has done. One of my favorites, "Run Away With Me," fea tures Hall on string synthesizer (sounds a little like the tone of electric slide guitar), and opens with a riff much like the beginning riff to Van Morri son's "Domino." "Run Away With Me," is more genuinely rousing than "Home At Last." The "Arms/Half Moon" medley is almost entirely instru mental, so Hall's guitar shines here. He ain't Clapton, Hend rix, or Santana, but something else, and it sounds good. There's also a great gutsy sax sole. "Firefly Lover" is sweet and mellow, with the rich vocals Kirk to teach "hovel" courses By April D. Evans Who Is Elizabeth D. Kirk? Guilfordian of Hall and Pousette-Dart. And if you like good backing vocals, check out the title song, with Carly and James. "Cocaine Drain" closes out side Two It's acoustic and eerie, and asks the question "You're so different now, are you going down that Cocaine drain?" Obviously not your average coke-is-fantastic-and so-ultra-chic song (a la Jackson Browne). The originality is vast ly refreshing. "Power" is a refreshing al bum. It's nothing innovative or brilliant, but it's good solid middle-of-the-road rock. Pieces of it may approach the simplis tic appeal of pop, but it's listenable and likeable for the same reason. pre-med program at Brown, she is also the Director of the Honors Program in English.
