page six UNC-G brings classic drama to Greensboro By Steve Gilliam UNC-G News Bureau When Dr. Richard Mennen talks about the upcoming sea son of drama in the 1979-80 schedule of the Theatre of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, he calls it "the best of all possible seasons." The theater schedule of four mainstage productions is laced with some of the enduring, all-time classics of the stage "Hamlet" by William Shake speare, "Uncle Vanya" by Semester in Germany begins Twenty-eight Guilford stu dents departed from New York for Munich, Germany on Sun day, September 2nd. Professor William Burris, the leader of the semester, flew over a week in advance to meet with the faculty and make plans for the opening of the semester pro gram when the students arrive. The orientation will include: —a social evening on Tues day, September 4th, when the students and members of the faculty become acquainted. ' -a walking tour of Munich on Thursday, September 6th, led by Professor Karl Fischer, Pro fessor of English in the Tech nical University and President of the Columbus Gesellschaft. -a bus trip to and hike up Brunnstein in the Bavarian Alps with the members of the Colum bus Gesellschaft on Saturday, September Bth. -a social evening with all the families with whom the stu dents live and the families of Center for Personal Growth offers services By Jane Caris Nearly three weeks have passed since you arrived at Guilford and by now you may be experiencing a number of the following feelings: frustration with all the demands; elation in being independent, or in simply having made it so far; longing for familiar faces and home; bewilderment or excitement about what the meaning of the next four years might be for you. A certain amount of turmoil is basic to learning, change and growth. That is where the Center for Personal Growth may be of help. We provide a variety of opportunities to turn turmoil into creative change or to stimulate the kind of changes you want to happen. In the course of the year we plan to offer several workshops among which will be the following: assertiveness training, de signed for people who would Anton Chekhov, and "A Christ mas Carol," based on Charles Dickens' beloved holiday tale. "We're all very excited about the challenge and, in a sense, the risks we're taking in doing a season of such substance," said Mennen. "The plays call for a very high level of talent in their acting, directing and staging and if we don't measure up to them, we'll know it. The semester classes will begin on Tuesday, September 4th. The courses offered this semester are: Elementary Ger man, Intermediate German, Governments of West and East Germany, Theory and Practice like to learn to say "no" and to assert their rights without cau sing unnecessary offense; a workshop on dreams designed to use dreams and fantasies to heighten self awareness; a com munication workshop, a ten week educational program de signed to improve the skill of good listening; a workshop on controlling stress and tension, where you can learn methods of relaxation and tension reduc tion; a workshop designed to introduce you to self-assess ment as a tool for life/work planning. Dr. John Joy, an assistant professor in UNC- G's Department of Communica tion and Theatre will direct the production, which features a musical score by famed compo ser and conductor Leonard Bernstein. With a host of fine tunes and Bernstein's score, the produc tion will run Sept. 27-29 and Oct. 4-6 in Aycock Auditorium on campus. The play follows Candide and his companions as they search for "the best of all possible places." The show will of Democracy, History of Mod ern Germany, and Art History. "It's very much a part of the serious side of theater even though it's very funny and entertaining.
