Bengel joins Guilford faculty
By Suzette Holbrook
Staff Writer
As a new, full-time professor
of English at Guilford College
as well as a wife and mother,
Jane Bengel finds her life to be
a full and busy one. Speaking of
the intricacies of combining a
career and family, Bengel
seems assured of her ability to
handle the two simultaneously,
though, "It's often tricky to
work out."
Teaching is no novelty for
Bengel who has taught part
time here for eight years.
Initially hired in 1972, to teach
at Guilford's now relocated
downtown division, she has also
instructed classes at Greens

boro Technical Institute and at
A & T University. Last spring,
on hearing of an opening in the
English Department, Bengel
applied for the position and was
hired.
while her specialties are
Charles Dickens and Victoria
literature, Bengel is currently
teaching both English 150 and
151. "I'm looking forward to
teaching upper-level courses
next semester," she comments.
The Child and Literature is
probably the course that she
will teach at that time.
Bengel sees abounding evi
dence of the Quaker influence
upon the general orientation of
Guilford. "I'm an ardent sup
porter of the Quaker method
and philosophy. I've also no
ticed unusually close relation
ships between students and
faculty."
Besides strongly supporting
the honor code, Bengel believes
that the Quaker community
conducts business in a much
more civilized and humane way,

In her classes she attempts to
utilize the Quaker emphasis
upon the individual by conduc
ting round-robin discussions,
rather than employing the lec
ture technique.
Why study English? Bengel
comments, "the study of litera
ture is a reflection of a cul
ture, it's everydayness, and its
ethical and spiritual concerns.
It's good training and exercises
the mind, moving between the
world of generalizations and the
world of the concrete."
