page eight France in the summertime By Roger Lifson Although it might not be Paris in the springtime, Guil ford is offering a Summer School in the land of Monet and de Gaulle. Professor James McNab, chairperson of Foreign Languages at Guilford College; and Professor Kathleen Bulgin of UNC-G, will be the leaders of the 1980 Summer School to France. The two courses being taught are "A Nous Deux Maintenant: Paris in Context", and "French Conversation". Instead of try ing to teach a course on French Civilization from the beginning, McNab has devised "Paris in Context". This course will focus on Paris; its trends and culture. "French Conversation" is designed to teach practical French. A fair amount of listen ing and speaking will be re quired. All students should have at least two semesters of College French before consider ing this trip abroad. All classes will be held in French, except for the guest speakers who will be speaking in English. Due to the success of the Guilfordian previous trips to France, there have been several good contacts made with hotels and people. There is a certain continuity that is assured to make this trip a smoothly run program. The group will depart from New York on May 22, and stay in Paris until June 20. From June 20-27 the group will be in the Loire Valley; from June 27 until July 4, the group will stay in Nice. July 4-26 is scheduled for independent travel. The group will meet in Paris on July 26 and then depart for New York. Since the group will be on independent travel on July 14, nothing is planned for Bastille Day. The group will be staying in a "pension", which is a private boarding house. Since 1970, the summer schools have been stay ing in this "pension" which is located on the left bank of Paris. McNab has lived in France and taught at the University of Nice. His enthusiasm for his summer program guarantees a rewarding experience. Cost of the trip will be $1,695.
