page four Little Feat lives on By Gwen Bikis Columnist Little Feat —DownOn the Farm I've never heard anybody say they didn't like Little Feat; like the Beatles, Feat seems to enjoy a universal appeal. Among people who've heard of them, that is for there are some in this world who have yet to be introduced to the joys and delights of Little Feat. The band has enjoyed a solid, if not overwhelming following, and is respected among musi cians of all genres. ("Down beat", a jazz magazine, ran a feature article on them a few years ago). They don't, however, enjoy or perhaps more accurately, suffer from - too much hype. All of these means, of course, that Kiss, and groups of Kiss' caliber, need not worry about any competitive threat from Little Feat. This is Little Feat's last album (barring an almost-inev itable "Createst Hits" release), so I suppose it's a scarilege, especially after Lowell George's tragic and untimely death, to say that "Down On the Farm" is a disappointment, and in much the same way George's solo effort, "Thanks I'll Eat It Lift year more people had cancer of the colon-rectum thin my other Mllg * T And you haven't had aprocto lately? Procto: an everyday way of saying proctoscopic examination. It's a simple diagnostic test for cancer of the colon and rectum. And it helps save more lives than any other step in the checkup. So, if you're over 40, you should have a procto as part of your health examination. Just think of it as a regular part of living. f. American Cancer Society • A • S? This album, though, sounds a little bit flabby, perhaps due to over-lush production. "Wake Up Dreaming", on Album^l^ the second side, is almost unrecognizable as Little Feat. Parts of "Down On the Farm" sound like Anyband U.S.A. Little Feat has been homogen ezed, and, what's worse, Lowell George is the man primarily responsible for the production here. Not too long ago I read a review that compared Little Feat's music to that made by the best of black bands, con cluding that the Doobie Brothers (whatever shortcom ings they may have) and Feat are the only two white bands 1 XN -THE"BA& lam fen OH,rw 6\bvs oot 51,05 she" got me pee lin' MKET A cm o F pea soup... > UtJH by M.B. You can hear the proof of this assertion on "Kokomo", my favorite on the entire album. "Kokomo" features the best slide guitar Lowel George con tributed to all The Farm. "Kofcomo" catches at your ears and at your feet like the best of Little Feat always has. "Fat Man In the Bathtub" . . . "Sailing Shoes" .. . "Tripe Face Boogie" . . . "All That You Dream" ... I grow more nostalgic by the minute. Little Feat was truly a great band, though this album is certainly not the finest example of the extent of their greatness. Down On the Farm is not the most appropriate of send-offs, but Little Feat really was a great band. May they, especially "Lowell," rest in peace.
