GUILFORDIAN, September 3, 1980, S2lii9ramS9 tk 9Pv uHi jHKL ifIMBF *>■ >. 'Kj&£L . -Jam | *W The football team has been practicing hard since mid-August Freshmen brighten outlook When you lose 18 seniors from your football team, it's time to do some recruiting, fast. If you're a big time coach the job is fairly simple, you recognize what you need, seek out the high school stars to fill those needs, offer the world, and hand them the application. If you're Charles Forbes, you must spend long hours at the_ office and on the phone hoping to draw some talent that was either overlooked by the big schools, wasn't overlooked but wasn't interested, or simply "Well, here we are un beaten, untied, unscored on, and going into our first game." PAGE EIGHT wasn't good enough Some times your work pays off, and sometimes it doesn't. It can be a frustrating business. Apparently the efforts of Forbes and his staff have paid off this time. 36 talented fresh man make this "the best recrui ting year in a long time." Several of the newcomers could gain starting roles this season. Add 40 returning lettermen to the freshmen and the potential is real for a banner season. Forbes views it all with a cautious optimism; "With so many young people we're going to make young mistakes. We expect that. The first few games are pivotal because we need to establish a winning attitude. Hopefully, one of our strengths will be a good senior leader ship." Preseason injuries have al ready taken their toll, with the offensive line being hardest hit. Senior Dean Gravely is out for the season following knee sur gery, and Bill Branson, also a senior, is questionable with a badly injured ankle. Both Gra vely and Branson were starting offensive lineman. Numerous shoulder injuries have also hurt the squad. With three weeks of practice, including an Elon scrimmage which Forbes labeled "very positive," the Quakers open up at home with Emory & Henry this Saturday, Sept. 6, at 1:30 at the Armstrong Athletic Center. The team has yet to lose to E & H under Forbes and that has him a little worried; "The law of averages has got to catch up with you sometime. Because we'vealways beaten them in the past people naturally expect us to beat them again. That's a dangerous attitude. We can beat any team on the schedule, but we can also be beaten by any team. Again, the first few games are very important." Last year's squad finished with a disappointing 4-5 record after jumping off to a 3-0 start. "We started very strongly but after a few losses, the team really got down and we just couldn't bring them out of it. As coach, I have to accept respon sibility for that and work hard to avoid a similar letdown this year." Look, for an improve ment on last year's mark begin ning with a win this Saturday.
