Baseball to open season March 2 By Fred Pavalko Guilford's baseball team opens its 1981 season at home this year with a doubleheader on March 2, against Longwood College. The Quakers are com ing off a 14-12 season in 1980 which was their best since going 20-16 back in 1977. Head Coach Stewart May nard will have five seniors returning this year including ace pitcher Johnny Hodges who last year mounted a 4-3 record along with an impressive 2.06 ERA against some of Guilford's PRACTICAL SELF-DE FENSE FOR WOMEN or how not to be a victim. Topics for discussion include: mental pre paration, avoiding danger, wea pons, staying in shape. This workshop will be held March 5 and 66:oo - 8:00 p.m. March 7 - 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Rosenthal Gymnasium, UNC-G. The fee is $25.00 *** "I'M EXHAUSTED, I'M COLD. . BUT I LOVE IT!" Come to the Gym Lobby this Friday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. and join the Track Club. All recreational runners and joggers are wel come! toughest competition. The Quakers will be without last years leading hitter and standout catcher Barry Bailiff who graduated last spring. Coach Maynard says he will miss the services of Bailiff but hopes that players such as freshman William Chris Mor gan who hit a red hot .484 in 13 games this past fall will be able to help counter the loss. During those 13 games, Guilford moun ted a 5-5-3 record. Among other standouts this past fall was a Guilford College Notebook SCUBA DIVING For anyone age 15 or older. All scuba equipment and books will be provided by the instructor. There will be 7 sessions in the pool and then 6 open water dives. Upon successful competi tion of the course divers will be certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instruc tors and Scuba Schools Interna tional. Tues. and Thurs. 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Maximum of 12 for course. Fee $225.00 all trips, equipment and books included. *** The T. Gilbert Pearson chap ter of the National Audubon Society, with members in Guil ford County and the surround ing area, is presenting the film "Wild and Wonderful Alaska" Tues., Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m This film was produced by Greens boro native Ken Creed, who narrates each showing in person and is available to answer questions afterward. Maynard, who now has only two sure starting pitchers in Hodges and Jan Richardson, says he is still looking to fill three other starting spots. Hopefully, the beginning of the season will see the school's new scoreboard up and in use. This is a season which holds high hopes for Maynard and the players of his 29 man roster. ADVANCED LIFESAVING The course is an excellent program of personal instruction in lifesaving skills. This pro gram concludes with a dual certification examination (YMCA & Red Cross) that if passed fulfills a basic require ment for any lifeguarding posi tion. The renowned, 18-member Franz Liszt Orchestra of Buda pest will perform on Monday, Feb. 23, at Greensboro War Memorial Auditorium. The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. and will include selections from the works of Bach, Mozart, Purcell, Brahms, and Dvorak. Composed of graduates of the Franz Liszt Academy in Buda pest, Hungary, the ensembles has a 19-year reputation as one of the world's best chamber orchestras. Ticket information is avail able through the coliseum box office and the Aycock Audi torium box office at UNC-G The Aycock box office is open Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Men win 1, drop 2 by Pete Fraunhdtz The Guilford men's basket ball team ended the week with a victory at home against Atlantic Christian and two losses on the road at the hands of Lenoir Rhyne and High Point as their record fell to 12-13. On Monday night in Hickory, N.C., Wayne Freeman's 34 point performance was the only bright spot as the Quakers were routed 81-67 by Lenoir Rhyne. The Bears, behind 69% shoot ing from the floor, took a 42-29 half-time advantage. Guilford could get no closer than 10 in the second half in losing their twelveth. Lenoir Rhyne's record improved to 12-8. The Quakers returned to Ragan-Brown Field House on Wednesday night to hand At lantic Christian a 77-62 thrash ing. Guilford's man-to-man defense in the first half proved to be devastating to the clearly inferior ACC team, as the Quakers mounted a 41-25 half time lead. Serving as a camp counselor is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work with young people, ages 7-16. Sea Gull and Seafarer are health and character development camps located on the coast of North Carolina and feature sailing, motorboating, and seamanship, plus many usual camping activities including a wide variety of major sports. The Quakers saw their last chance elude them with 7 seconds remaining as Anthony Parrish's missed free throw attempt took a High Point bounce. Bruce Floyd of High Point came away with the rebound, and Parrish, who was fouled again in the process, made good on two free throws to provide the margin of victory. Postnell Seymour scored 14 points, and Wayne Freeman and Sporty Jeralds added ten each as Guilford fell to fourth place in the Carolinas Confer ence with a 6-6 record. High Point moved into second place at 7-4. ATTENTION!
