Mime makes new world vl Dr. Tom . . . Spouse hiring questioned self-serving decisions". The source also questions the wis dom of allowing spouses to head different department. "When heads of different departments are 'sleeping to gether,' there is bound to be some 'pillow talk' which could influence decisions and inter fere with objectivity," the em ployee says. Dr Louis Fike, professor of political science, is perhaps the most trenchant critic of what he sees as nepotism. Fike says that "hiring members of the same family is harmful to the college; it is pernicious." Responding to Dr. Rogers' statements, he said: "Contrary to what the Look into career alternatives A day-long program on 'Alternative Careers' has been set for Wednesday, February, 25. The Guilford College chap ter of the N.C. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) along with the IDS 101 Program and the Career Development and Experimental Learning Pro gram will sponsor the careers dav A panel discussion entitled "Confronting the System" will begin the day's activities in Sternberger Auditorium at 9:30 a m Representatives from the Brown Lung Association, the American Friends Service Com mittee, and Central Carolina Legal Services will participate in the panel discussion which will focus on how each of their organizations interacts and sometimes confronts the larger socio-economic system. According to Suzanne Sulli van, a member of the Guilford College PIRG chapter, the morning panel discussion will "enable students to analyze these groups' roles within the By Mike Barker Mime is one of the most difficult of the performing arts, but when it is done well, it can transport the audience into another world. In this world, the only things that are real are those created from the imagina tion The recent mime show by Dr. Tom and Seus gave its audience a glimpse into this fantastic universe of the mind Dr Tom (Tom Pierce) and Seus (Seus Edwards) have a great way of creating a mood and a story, yet leaving the details to the imagination of the audience. Their technique was illustrative, and their story was easy to follow More importan tly, they do not try to direct the audience's imagination. Lesser mimes often attempt to imagine everything for the audience which usually detracts from, rather than adds to, a piece. Not President says, Cuilford does practice a covert nepotism, at least to some extent. Decision making and the solution of problems tends to be indirect and covert." Fike moreover criticizes what he views as the inordinate intrusions of familial concerns into matters dealing with facul ty hiring. "If Guilford College in the family subsidy business, or in the education business?" he asks. The stress on Quaker values at the expense of a thorough investigation into charges of nepotism troubles him "Integrity and community at Guilford are at best an ideal. framework of the IDS 101 program." The Brown Lung Association is an organization of retired and active textile millworkers who are seeking compensation for their disabilities caused by ex posure to cotton dust. The American Friends Service Com mittee is a Quaker organization involved in programs of hu manitarian service, peace and social justice Central Carolina Legal Ser vices is a not-for-profit law firm that provides free legal aid for low-income people as well as advocacy and community edu cation. "Besides getting an under standing of these groups' roles, students will be exposed to people in non-traditional or alternative careers," said Sulli van From 11:30 to 1:30 in the Boren Lounge, these three groups and others from through-out the community will display information, distribute literature, and most important, be available to discuss volun- so for Dr Tom and Seus. They know where to let the audience take over and let the individual mind develop the full story. The setting of the specific mood is probably Dr Tom and Seus's strongest ability. From no other group could one get such a joyous mood from a story about a toddler growing up The audience was taken from that extreme to the despair created from a simple story of a girl and a sparrow. Despite such drastic changes in mood, the audience was never jolted from one extreme to another but rather carried gently by Dr Tom and Seus Dr Tom and Seus established excellent rapport with the aud ience and gave a brief introduc tory talk about mime. They later followed this with a piece in and not a realitv Since there is no reason to trust Cuilford faculty and employees more than anyone else, conflict-of interest, however caused, is likely to be as much a problem at Guilford as elsewhere. Guil ford does not have a monopoly on virtue, indeed far from it," he says Furthermore, Fike states that "the only way nepotism can be justified at Guilford is to as sume that the college is so corruption ridden that nepotism contributes to institutional sym metry." Dr. Fike thinks there are three reasons the nepotism is teer work, internships and in some cases job openings with Guilford students. "We are encouraging mem bers of the College community to take advantage of both programs," said Art Donsky, a PIRG staff member "Many students are interested in Al ternative Careers,' but don't know where to begin to look for information about these organi zations. We hope the day's programs can provide a good starting point," he added Per sons seeking more information about the Alternative Careers Day should contact the PIRG office in Founders. which the younger children in the audience were invited to participate Unlike many lesser group, Dr Tom and Seus are not afraid of an audience They readily opened themselves to a series of improvisations sugges ted by the audience The program closed with a very complex piece about God, the creation, and the events immediately thereafter Dr. Tom let the audience exper ience the miracle of creation, using only his body and the simple background music played by Seus. The show was ended with God unhappy with the world and with mankind. Fantastically, this inspired each person present to wonder if he/she shouldn't improve a little, not an unpleasant feeling, but one which could not have been inspired by anyone but Dr. Tom and Seus. wrong.
