Despite the losses, player-coach Donna Becker was "very enthused" with the team's performance. "Considering the fact that we've only two or three girls who have ever played before. I thinlc we did an excellent job." Former Guilford lacrosse player Peter Reichard has taken over the coaching duties for the women, who have matches against E.C.U. and U.N.C.-Ch next Monday in Chapel Hill. As to Dr. Staff's phenomenal energy, Somon believes the man may have been illegally cloned. "What this has pro duced, of course, is some 40 people on campus who look exactly like Jonathan Malino." (Fortunately, Dr. Malino was not available for comment.) One student source claimed he had TA'd a lab section last semester, for which Dr. Staff's name had appeared on the schedule instead of his own. If you have Guilford confronts Federal cuts By David Stewart 'Bl Part 2 Part one addressed some of the immediate consequences of the federal cutbacks in educa tional dollars and how Guilford College would respond. But what happens five or ten years from now? Will solutions to the tight money squeeze be ade quate for the long-range plans of students and institutions? Even prior to federal funding changes, Guilford has been operating two programs that allow students and families to spread educational costs over a longer period. One, the Mon thly Installment Plan, permits payment of three installments over the semester after a 25% down payment, with only a 4% service charge. The Parent Loan Program arranges for qualifying parents a loan of up to S2OOO a year at 10% interest on a 4-6 year payment schedule. Sigma Pi Sigma inductions held By Stephen Harvey On Monday, April 13, Guil ford physics students Scott Da villa, Bill Meikrantz and Eddie Vaughn were inducted into the Guilford College chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma, a national physics honor society. The speaker for the induction dinner was Steve Taylor, a 1975 graduate of Guilford College in physics, who spoke of his work with the North Carolina Educa tional Computing services. Mr. Taylor holds a masters degree from Dartmouth in plasma There is also some indication that the entire nepotistically cloned Staff clan is living in a commune somewhere west of the airport. It is obviously to this reporter that the festering fungus of scandal continues to cling to the soft underbelly of our campus community. New ap proaches are imperative. All proposals have not been fully explored. For instance, programs similar to LEEP may be viable in a private sector arrangement. The federal De partment of Justice, in a pro gram now handled by the Education Department, made available to both pre-service and in-service AJ majors a maximum of $2200 a year for undergraduate tuition. Upon completion of degree work and successful employment in a public criminal justice agency, the loan obligation would be forgiven at the rate of 25% a year. Possibly, private companies could enter into the same arrangement with students in other majors. A contractual arrangement could specify con ditions concerning the amount of the loan and terms for cancellation, i.e., working for the firm for a set number of years. Such a program would of course be subject to the needs of the industry and fluctuations in the general economic labor picture.
