No honey for yellow jackets
By Edwin Bass
The Guilford College football
team continued its winning
streak by beating Randolph-
Macon September 12. The 21-0
victory was the Quakers' second
straight shutout in the beginning
of the season. The Quakers'
victory was similar to their
previous win against Emory &
Henry. In its 23-0 victory,
Guilford again used the effective
running of Charlie Heard, along
with the excellent defensive
effort of Lee Segars. Heard
rushed for 100 yards against R.
M., as compared to last week's
126 yard performance. Segars
also had an effective game;

Guilford's first score of the
game came through a 61 yard
drive directed by senior quarter
back Keith Millner. The touch
down came via a 30 yard pass to
wide receiver Tom Gorga. With
twelve minutes left in the half,
Randolph Macon appeared ready
to score. However, a holding call
and a blocked punt by Segars
drastically changed the situation.
Defensive end Steve Fiedler
recovered the blocked punt on the

half the Quaker defense held the
Yellow Jackets to only 69 yards.
The Quaker scoring was closed
when Steve Fiedler ran in an 11
yard interception.
Guilford's next game is at
home September 19 against the
defending NAIA national
champions, Elon. Elon is without
a doubt the toughest team on
their schedule. Guilford coach
Charles Forbes commented,
"We'll have to play a near perfect
game to beat them (Elon).
Hopefully winning our first two
games will give us the forward
momentum to play well against
them."

Women serve up victory
By Edwin Bass
If anyone has forgotten what
happened in Guilford Sports last
May, look up at the ceiling in the
field house. Hanging there is a
banner proclaiming the Lady
Quakers as the 1981 NAIA tennis
champions.
Grand Canyon College of
Arizona pulled off a near miracle
to tie Guilford on the final day of
the tournament. Coach Currie
shared the National Coach of the
Year honors.
Four Guilford Players brought
home All American honors:
Shirley Dunn of Woodbury, NY,
Leesa Shapiro of Fairfield, Ct.,
Sue Ireton of Westmont, NJ, and
Kerry Kennedy of North Olm
stead, Oh. Freshman Tammy
Strickland of Virginia Beach won
honorable mention All American.
At the end of the quarterfinals,
all Guilford players had been
eliminated, but had obtained 27
points in their matches (total).
The Piper will be having its
first meeting Tuesday, Sep
tember 22 at 8:00 p.m. Anyone
interested in working on the staff
of the Guilford College Literary
magazine should attend this
meeting. We are also accepting
submissions in the Publications

This score was high enough to
allow them to finish in a tie for
first place. Grand Canyon had to
win both of their doubles matches
and singles matches on the final
day of the tournament to acheive
a victory. The Grand Canyon
players came through in the
clutch.
"With the pressure Grand
Canyon was under, having to win
both the singles and doubles
finals-and then doing it-I don't
mind sharing the title with a
team like that," said Coach
Currie.
One exciting aspect of the
women's win is that it was their
first time competing in a national
tournament. "The women were
so thrilled that a banner
proclaiming a national cham
pionship in women's sports can
take its place in the field house
alongside the one the men's
basketball team won with its na
tional NAIA championship in
1973."
