International Day: cultures on display
By Paige Hogan
This Sunday, November 21, the
International Relations Club,
along with the Interlink students,
will be sponsoring International
Day. The activities will be held in
Sternberger from 12:30 to 4:30
and then will be followed by an
evening program from 7:00 to
11:00.
For the activities IRC mem

Keys dorm changes
Last Sunday morning around
8:00 a.m. Binford Dorm ex
perienced another invasion by an
outsider. The incident occurred
right after security had com
pleted a shift.
A man walked into the dorm
soon after the building had been
unlocked for the day. With a key,
he unlocked a door of one of the
rooms, but when the woman in
the room woke up, he ran off.
According to Bill Thornberry,
coordinator of the dorm, only one
divided into six sections. Each
group, which consists of several
countries, will be displaying
booths with specialties such as
Japanese paper folding, a British
tea house and a photo booth in
which you may pay to have your
picture taken in a foreign
costume. There will also be a
large variety of authentic in
ternational foods which can be
tasted free of charge.
Each of the 23 booths will be
decorated with the country's
room was entered. Ken Schwab
said, "Bob White feels that the
man had only one key to one
room."
Bob White is planning to install
chain locks on the women's doors
in Binford. According to a memo
sent out by the housing office,
these locks should be installed by
the end of the week.
White is also meeting with the
women who live in Binford this
week to discuss what they can do
to protect themselves against
intruders.

New bus service on trial
Have wheels, will travel?
A new bus service providing Guilford students
transportation to shopping malls, movies and eating
establishments, is running on a trial basis on
November 18th and 20th and December 2nd and 4th.
The service costs .50 cents per round trip and will
leave at 6:30,8:30 and 10:30 p.m. between Duke and
New Garden Hall. It is being sponsored by the
International Relations Club, the Community
Senate and Student Services.
On Wednesday, November 18 and December 2,
rides will be offered to Carolina Circle Mall, with
possible stops at Friendly Shopping Center, Janus
Theater, "T.K. Tripp's," "Romberg's," "Oh!
Brian's" and "Sandwich Construction Company."
On Friday, November 20 and December 4, journeys
will be made to Four Seasons Mall with potential
stops at Pomona Outlet Mall, K-Mart and Dadio's."
The need for transportation to shopping and
entertainment facilities was expressed in meetings
with students of individual resident halls last year.
This semester, the International Relations Club
gathered detailed data accessing student tran
sportation needs, and sent a proposal to the Student
Affairs Committee for organizing and carrying out
a bus service best capable of meeting these needs.
colors and flag. There will be five
booths representing Europe,
four from Asia, one from Africa,
one representing North America,
four from Central America and
two representing South America.
Interlink students will be spon
soring six boothes.
The night program will consist
of dancing from Holland and
square dancing which will be
open for participation. There will
also be various skits and songs
put on by Interlink.'
Christina Collett, Chairman for
the International Day and a
student from Norway felt that in
America, you learn alot about a
different culture from just living
here, so it's nice to be able to
share your culture sometimes."
A second reason for the In
ternational Day according to
Shakuntala Maharajh, President
of the IRC, is that "We felt that
we needed something in the fall to
balance out the International
Dinner in the spring. Also during
International Day we will be able
to take a closer look at each
country than is possible at the
International Dinner."
The proposal was subsequently sent to the
Community Senate and the project was awarded
approximately $120.00 from student activity fees for
supplies, drivers and use of college vans.
This unique bus system is currently operating on
a trial basis, and will be discontinued if not suf
ficiently utilized. If enough students use the low
cost service, it will be continued next semester, and
hopefully become a self-supported and permanent
vehicle for escaping the "on-campus" duldrums.
Guilford has also introduced some long-awaited
changes for those ever-increasing times when one
must find a place on campus to study. Library
hours have been expanded on a trial basis, and the
new hours are: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to
2 a.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday
from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Substantial late night use of the library is essential
for continuation of the service.
After Thanksgiving, the "old computer" room in
the basement to Founders will be open as a 24-hour
study space. There will be space for writing papers,
typing, reading and studying for tests. During
finals, all of Founders will be open 24 hours and
coffee will be available.
