Page 10 Lacrosse rebounds after opening loss by Michael Van Wagner After a season opening 14-8 loss to the College of Wooster last Wednesday, the Guilford lacrosse team rebounded Saturday, thras ing Randolph-Macon 21-7, and then topped Union College 16-11 on Monday, improving its record to 2-1 on the young season. Coming after several miserable days, last Wednes day's balmy 70° sunshine must have put the Guilford stickmen back into a Ft. Lauderdale frame of mind. For so they played. Despite jumping off to an early 2-0 lead, the Quakers found themselves tied at the end of one period and trailing the Ohioans 8-4 by halftime. Although during the intermission many fans hur ried to get a bit of dinner, there was little reason to hurry back, for The Quakers never got closer than 9-6 in the second half. Hav ing taken the advantage both physically and psychologically, Wooster put the game on ice mid way through the final period, scoring three goals before the Guilford defense had time to say "pass the Coppertone, please" three times fast, increasing the margin to 14-6. Guilford did answer with two goals of its own, cutting the difference to 14-8 before the final whistle. Somewhat at a loss to explain Pitching, muscle help produce three key victories By Chris Mackie The Guilford College baseball team upped its record to 4-1 with three big wins last week. We looked like we were in slow-motion out there today (Wednesday). Perhaps we work ed too hard on Monday and Tues day. Whatever the case, this loss is a real setback to our pro gram." Senior tri-captain Brian Savage echoed Miller's sen timents and offered a more suc cinct analysis: "We were mental ly unprepared, we didn't execute, and they took control." And as if the final score wasn't a big enough setback. The Quakers may have lost A 1 Barth for the season after the sophomore midfielder collided with a Wooster player late in the game. On Saturday, if the weather was anything but balmy, The Quakers were anything but lacklustre. Jumping off again to an early lead, Guilford never let down, building a 10-2 lead by the half and coasting the rest of the way. Pacing the attack which peppered the Randolph-Macon net with 53 shots, were Savage (6 goals, lassist),Kerry Donovan (3 goals, 3 assists) and senior tri captain David Frank (3 goals). The defense also turned in an ad mirable performance with Ron Todd Roberts had three hits apiece and Harley Miller added three more, including a three-run homer in the first inning. On the mound, Randy Doss, Chris Mackie, and Mark Malthouse kept Salem in check with Mackie getting the win in relief. Commenting on his club's turn around, Miller cited preparations and determination as the key fac tors: "This time we took it easier in the practices prior to the game and I think that helped today (Saturday). And of course on top of that we were determined to regain some pride and respect. I think the added incentive to make-up for Wednesday's em barrassment was clearly evident in our performance.
