[Features Keep the Momentum Going From My Perspective by Dennis Blue President, Community Senate Jayne Mardock, Kenlyn Riggs, and I are very excited about next year! As the new Executive Council members for the Com munity Senate, we see great potential for Guilford in the com ing months. Next year can bring tremendous improvement in all aspects of student life and we are willing to work hard to see those improvements happen. We are particularly interested in im proving the cafeteria and are looking at ways to help alleviate the problem we now have with over-crowding. We are also very interested in improving residence hall life and would like to learn how the Guilford com munity feels about co-ed housing. Early next year we will conduct a survey regarding co-ed living so that we will have your opinion about it. Only after we feel cer tain that you want more co-ed dormitory space we will try to ar range it. These are just a couple of things we are looking into right now; I will write about other ideas in subsequent columns next year. Network, Alcohol Awareness Day, and Leadership Guilford in particular. We want to do things that will improve the Guilford Experience for the typical student. We want to address problems and con cerns that are on your mind. To do this, however, we have to know what you think and how you feel about your life here at Guilford. We want to know what bugs you about this place as well as what you think is too good to change. We are willing to work hard for you, but improving your life here involves more than Jayne, Kenlyn, and me - it in volves you. Without your thoughts and help, we are too weak to do anything. Guilford is a wonderful place to live and learn and with your support we can make the appropriate ad justments to keep it that way. Come to Senate meetings next year, and speak your mind. It is your Senate and we are there to listen and learn. Usually there is no such thing but because of rain this weekend the Quaker baseball tean) was in for a long day of baseball Monday night. The Quakers started off the Carolina's Conference Playoffs with a victory at home against sixth seeded Pembroke St. Dan Madden went the distance to im prove his record to 4 wins 3 losses. Jerry Kidd led a strong of fense with a single, double, home run and four rbi's in five at bats. Ken Cornelison blasted a two run home run in the fourth to give Guilford a 6-0 lead it never relin quished. Barry Whitlock had three hits in the 7-4 triumph. On Friday night the playoffs moved downtown to War Memorial Stadium. For their next test in the now double elimination tour nament the Quakers faced third seeded Catawba. J.R. Richard son twirled a masterful four hit shutout striking out four while walking three. The 6-0 victory marked the first time Catawba has been blanked in three years. A Harlie Miller two run first inn ing home run was all the runs Richardson needed for the vic tory. Miller also ripped two singles in five at bats right fielder Students Toasted In an attempt to recognize the outstanding achievements of Guilford College students, the Guilfordian is proud to publish the recipients of Special Awards. The winners of these laurels were announced April 17 at the Student Awards Convocation and deserve sincere congratulations. Due to space limitations, however, the list of Departmental Honors and Dana Scholars had to be exclud ed. Senior Excellence Award by The Board of Visitors Roger Pettingell Eugene S. Hire Achievement Award David Hood Mike Azzarita hit a 400 foot home run for his first collegiate home run. After a Saturday rainout the Quakers played a game on Sun day the wished was rained out. Top seeded Wingate went through five Quaker pitchers in cluding third sacker Todd Roberts in the 17-4 seven inning wipeout. The loss set the stage for the greatest team effort I have ever witnessed. If the Quakers were to win the Carolinas Conference Championship they would have to win three games on Monday. In the 2:00 p.m. opener the Quakers won a heartstopper over High Point College. After cruising along for six innings with a 7-2 lead thanks to a Miller two run homer and two Ken Cornelison home runs pitcher Dan Madden got in trouble. High Point took an 8-7 lead on three two run homers and before the seventh inning was over Madden was replaced continued on page 4 The George I.
