Each student also wrote a paper on a topic of his or her choice for each country. Martha Cooley taught the course on Russia and Jim Cooley instructed the one on China, and they gave history lec tures in hotel romos while in the respective countries. Geology professor Cyril Harvey was also along, and provided lessons from his knowledge on the geography of the two countries. It is undoubtably difficult to do justice to such a trip because everyday was filled with new ex periences. But, from entering the Soviet Union and going through customs, trading money on the black-market and swimming in a lake in the middle of Siberia, to helping Chinese refugees take valuables across the Mongolian Chinese Border, staying in the Peking state guest house where Kissinger, Carter, Nixon, and Busch stayed on their visits, and eating eel at lunch, each ex perience provided a chance to learn something new, whether it be about history, a different culture, or about oneself.
