Soccer Club By Josie Alexander and Rita Maroon Guilford College Women's Soc cer Club had an excellent season this Fall with a 5-4-2 record. The core of the team's strength was the maturing talent of 5 up perclassmen who have been play ing Guilford soccer for 3 years, Madsie Bertram, Gwyn Tracy, Jocelyn Whitaker, Linda Thur, and Mary Benbow. Bertram, Tracy led the team in scoring and assists while defensive backs Whitaker and Thur plus Benbow the goalkeeper, helped keep the opponents to as many goals as Tracy and Bertram scored together. The majority of the team were Freshmen and second year players who all have an incredi ble abilty to learn the game and have promising potential. Defen sively, Claire Bresnihan dominated the center with consis tent aggressive attacks and phenomenal ball control. Kim -for mos-fc of +op ) \ ! sibvvn 5 - ®*Ue-s FlA*b VIITMIM A (\ mcx ' coumßY * . ML,, \tf I CawrfcCT: I' +U mu6it at lowers pri&e-s >J Winters, Theresa Murray, Laura Linderman and Ann Ursell had a baptism of fire with this season being either the first time to ever play soccer or the first time to play since Junior High. ■ By necessity they played a ma jority of game time holding their own if not dominating their opo nent. Sophomore and Freshmen players already experienced in soccer, Brenn Murray, Sallie Gross, Amy Mahan and Carol Nieukirk had excellent perfor mance with consistent play and hustle. More often than not they dominated their opponents with still a hell of a lot of talent left un tapped. The team lost a number of talented and potentially ex- plosive players for several reasons incuding: injuries, in ability to make practice time, and lack of interest. The healthy return of Jennifer Mclnnes, Ginger Gaffney and Carol Swan son is greatly anticipated. The team was under the direc tion of head coach Will Flash with superb assistance from coaches: Steve Rubinstein, Chris Darnell, John Lenartowicz, and Tim Savidge, as well as Advisor Steve Skinner. And last but certainly not least was the invaluable ex istence and ability of Susan Price, Business Manager. The team statistically did very well this season out scoring the opposition 22 to 17 with several shut-outs and games where they put three and four times as many shots on goal. "Credit both the of fense and defense on that satistic," states Coach Flash. "Our best defense was an ex plosive offense and that could not have been achieved without the defense containing the ball on the opponents' half of the field." The combination of returning talented upperclassmen and an awesome freshman line-up led Flag football football game Jan. 2 between Michigan and Auburn, and members of the final four teams get to attend that game. In addition, the 24 teams in the flag football tournament can sub mit banners to be judged in a separate competition. This pro vides Guilford a very good chance to get some national recognition, especially as ESPN will be featuring the banners, the championship game, and highlights from the tournament in some of the network's broad casting. The Wahoos invite any ideas and suggestions for the design of Guilford's banner. So far the Wahoos have receiv ed lots of support from the school. Joyce Clark and the intramural Varsity the team to the best season of its history. Season highlights includ ed a 4-0 victory over Wake Forest and 2-1 victory in overtime against U.N.C. One problem was getting teams to play overtime in the event of a tie. To the disbelief of the coaching staff, (UNC and Greensboro Rhinos) teams declined to play overtime twice. I count is as a moral victory for us," says coach Rubinstein. "We never imagined a team not wan ting to play to the end," quips coach Darnell. The team is looking forward to another strong season in the spr ing and the possibility of attain ing varsity status next fall. Their most often asked question, jokes Coach Savidge and Coach Lenar towicz is "are we Varsity yet?" The team as well as the coaches are anxiously awaiting as well as working toward the answer to that question being in the affir mative for next Fall. "I am the proudest man on campus," proclaims-Head coach Will Flash. "They proved to themselves and to their oppoen nts that they are a team to be reckond with." continued from page 1 committee have played a signifi cant role. Bradley commented that Ms. Clark has been the main force, doing an incredible job with the arrangements for Guilford's participation. Tomlin added that this is probably an understatement. To help defray the high cost of the trip to New Orleans and the stay there, the team has received money from various places, including the Community Senate and Student Services. The House of Pizza is also spon soring the team, helping with piz za fundraisers last Sunday and Monday, and Geoff Miller has donated lacrosse jerseys for the team's use in competition. Team members also praise Two-job couples Campus Digest News Service The trials faced by dual career couples is compounded in the teaching profession by the lack of academic jobs. Finding two academic jobs in close proximity is extremely difficult for all but the luckiest and most persistent. Elisabeth Perry, full-time visiting pro fessor of history at the Univer sity of lowa, has some sur vival techniques. Persistence, not just for a year, but for many years, is necessary for the unemployed spouse. Time is best filled by writing, research projects, grant proposals and other related activities. Flexibility in job sharing, taking pay cuts, retraining and family relationships also enter the picture, as does continuing agressiveness in seeking out jobs. The unemployed spouse must remember, unfortunate ly, that no one owes them a job. You could say that you have to love teaching to be a teacher. captains McFall and Bradley for organizing and keeping the team together. "This is important to Guilford, and it's good that the school sup ports things like this," said Bradley. The team is psyched and looking forward to the trip to New Orleans. 1111111111111111111111111111 The English Wahoos are going to national flag football competi tion ! They need to make a banner to represent Guilford. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the banner design, contact John McFall or David Bradley.
