CANDIDATES Come and familiarize yourself with the candidates in an informal setting. Wednesday, February 15 4 p.m., Boren Lounge ******** VOTE ™ Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17. Polls will be open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. in Founders Lobby. Eric Locklear _ _ # 9 _ Barbara Ruby |J MOM 1 ICKCt Becky Gunn Eric Locklear and Becky Gunn. Barbara Ruby shown. Fellow Students, My name is Eric Locklear and I am campaigning for President of the College Union along with Barbara Ruby as my Vice-President, and Becky Gunn as Treasurer. Our ticket, if elected, plans to also appoint Susan Chase as secretary. Our reason for taking this action is simply that College Union is a representative body of the Students at Guilford College and it must be capable of tapping into all the needs of each and every student. To accomplish this, it must have an executive coun cil which is diverse enough to reach all student interests, while being large enough to branch itself out and draw upon the individual con cerns. My running-mates and I have two major goals of our administra tion. The first of these, and our primary objective, is the dispensing with the apparent trend of College Union's catering to one specific minority of students. I realize that this may or may not have been an inadvertant consequence of former administrations, but it is indeed something which must be spoken to. Bodies such as Concert Commit tee, Dance Committee, Film Committee, Coffee House, and the Recreation Committee are life bloods of our campus and are fed by you the students and they must be intent upon reflecting your wants, needs, and desires. If this is to be accomplished, apathy must be replaced by involvement. You must be heard and you will be heard. Secondly, the College Union and Student Senate are the two most important organizations on our campus. A certain friction seems to exist between these two major councils and my running mates and I find this appalling. Senate and Union are both designed to serve Guilco's students and it seems only logical that they might best do this in an atmosphere where each has some semblance of respect for the other, rather than in a flue of animosity. If elected, my officers and I will extend a hand of cordiality to the new executive council of the Senate so that we might work together, realizing that we have separate and distinct jobs but also that we have a common goal—serv ing you. Even if not elected, the members of my ticket take this time to challenge those who will be elected to the executive councils of these astute bodies—strive for a broader outlook, be concerned with the whole and not simply your self interests. Thank you for taking the time to listen to what we have to say, now elect us to College Union and let us listen to you. We, Derek Maingot, "Bo" Markley, Nathan Bohn, and Marnie Baum, are running for the Executive Council of the Community Senate for the 1984-85 academnic year. We are running as a four person ticket because we feel that the posi tion of the Vice-President can be divided so that the Executive Council can work more effectively. One of the Co-Vice Presidents will Co-chair the Clerks Committee with the President, and be responsible for overseeing Senate Committee work. The other Co-Vice President will chair the Budget Committee and will be responsible for the Senate budget. We have a lot of plans for the coming year which we are looking for ward to sharing with all of the community on Candidate's night. We would like to thank everyone for the support that we have receiv ed thus far and the Student Affairs Committee for their approval. Diana Wurster jayNorveii Union Ticket Libby Enos Libby Enos, Jay Norvell, and Diane Wurster. The Student Body and Diane Wurster as President of the College Union, Jay Norvell as Vice-President, and Libby Enos as Secretary can be "A Winning Team." Guilford College has a unique quality about it. There is friendly at mosphere which brings a feeling of togetherness on the campus. But, unfortunately this feeling falters greatly on the weekends. Guilford has become a suitcase college! Is it because there is not enough to keep them here on the weekends? When asked this question, many respond, "the social life here is dead." So the next question is how can we improve the social life at Guilford College? Last week in the Guilfordian "quotables", this ques tion was posed to students, and as Jay Norvell answered, "Diana Wurster, Libby Enos. and myself for College Union," could make a difference. But, only with the students' participation can this be done. Union Elections are this Thursday and Friday ; February 16th an 17th. Please don't ignore these elections. The Union is an important part of Guilford's social life. It plans the social activities on campus such as dances, films, coffeehouses, concerts, and other possible events. We hope, that with your participation and our representation of your ideas, we can make "A Winning Team" at Guilford! Guilfordian, February 15, 1984- Page three
