dutlfntriitan Volume LXVIII, No. 7 Substance Abuse Day Initiated By Task Force By Julia Yindra Substance Abuse Awareness Day, scheduled for November 27th, will include a vast variety of activities, exhibits and lectures as part of a campus-wide cam paign against alcohol and drug abuse. Claudette Frankin, co ordinator of the day's events, said that the idea for the cam paign came largely out of meetings of the Substance Abuse Task Force in the spring of 'B3. Franklin said the task force was originally formed to deal with issues that immediately af fect this campus directly in terms of drugs and alcohol. It "recognized the need in the Guilford community for educa tion on drug and alcohol issues," she said. The main goal of the event is to provide an educational en vironment in which students will have the opportunity to ask ques tions concerning "abuse and misuse of and alternatives to us ing artificial stimulants," said Franklin. The main focus of the various activities will be a day-long ex hibit in Founder's Hall to provide information about all substances, including alcohol and prescrip tion and over-the-counter drugs. Jane Caris will give a talk on "The Psychology of Addiction." Ken Schwab, Dick Dyer and other administrators will lead discussions on the legal ramifica tions of substance abuse for the college age population. To complete the day, the Grill Room will be the site of a special coffeehouse in the evening. Dur ing the evening's entertainment non-alcoholic drinks will be serv ed by bartenders and barmaids. The North Carolina chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous and other organizations in the state as wei 1 as local distributors ana distillers, have cooperated by providing a large amount of in formation and materials to the college. As a result the scheduled activities are close to cost-free for the Guilford community. Franklin says that volunteers are needed in many capacities, including staffing and setting up booths, and bartenders, bar maids for the coffeehouse.
