The Elvis Costello vocals
backed up by a basically
country-influenced band,
make The Smithereens (Jim
Babjak, Dennis Diken, Pat
DiNizio, and Mike Mesaros)
come out sounding like a
nearly-Top 40 band, but
because of their indecisive
style don't sound like they'll
make it beyond playing at
clubs. Chapel Hill's Don Dix
on, produced this upbeat, new
wave influenced album that is
definitely better the second

The Guilfordian, September 17, 1986
as "Time And Time Again"
the vocals are given a show
case they can't stand backed
up by over-subdued drums.
With "Blood And Roses"
however, the drums pick up a
bit, and the B-side sounds
much better (maybe in con
trast to the A-side). The tempo
comes down, the drums and
guitar take on a new wave
sound. On the whole, the band
is a little reminiscent of Jason
and the Scorchers. If you can
overlook the boring tracks,
and you like a country
influenced sound, this is a
pretty good album.
