Sports Men's Tennis Team Ranked 11th By Jennifer McCollam The men's tennis team, ranked eleventh in the na tion, spent their Spring Break following a strong schedule in Florida. They had a successful trip, winning four out of five matches, two of which were very close (5-4). They had one tough loss to Flagler, which is national ly ranked seventh. Both the team and Coach Ray Alley thought their trip to Florida was beneficial. "It gave us a clear in dication of areas we need to improve and where our strengths are as a team, he said. The team improved not only their scores but their friendships. "We became closer and that helped us pull each other through close matches," said Dave Grose, a junior from Ballston Spa, N.Y. By following their strong schedule, many agreed they learned a lot about themselves and each other. He has played some tough matches at both the number one and number two spots. Ricky has a lot of con fidence in the team members and thinks they are improving. "We have a good team, but we have a long way to go to reach the goals we set. I hope we can continue to improve throughout the season," said Feit. One of their main goals is to win the District Tour nament, which will be played at Guilford this vear. Second-seeded Jochen Klinke, a senior from Heidelberg. West Ger many is currently ranked No. 5 nationally in singles. Jochen is a strong player who has also been playing at both the number one and two spots. Both he and Feit made All- American last year. The doubles teams this year are stronger than they were last year, which gives them a better chance in matches. The number one doubles Jochen Klinke and Kick\ \ vh I'liotu 1.1 U lIH 1% team is Kiinke and Feit, followed by Richard Parker, a freshman from Greensboro and Dave Lambert, a freshman from Montreal, Canada Parker and Lambert are both starters, who are con sidered an important part of the team. The third doubles team consists of Ed Simko, a Women's Tennis Team A Success Bv Sue Crowther The women's tennis team has started its 1988 season with a smash, shut ting out its opponents 9-0 in 8 of 10 victories. The team's record as of March 21st is 10-1, the only loss being to Western Il linois, a division 1 team, 1-8. So far they are undefeated in the con ference and district with records of 5-0 and 2-0 respectively. The Quakers are return ing a very strong squad with 3 all-conference players, including senior, Jennifer Hunter, who also achieved all-district and NAIA Honorable Mention, All-American status. As of March Ist, Hunter has maintained her rank ing of 21st in the NAIA Na tionals. She is a strong, consistent player who is undefeated in the Quaker's Ist 11 matches. junior from Huntington N.Y. and Dave Grose together a strong com bination. The other members ol the tennis team are Pete Driscoll, a senior from Haddonfield, N.J., Keith Cipollaro, a sophomore from Greenwich, Conn, and Steve Dans a freshman from Chagrin Hunter is playing at number 2 singles and is co captain with senior, Cindy Nichols. Nichols is enthusiastic about the season and says "This is the best season in the 4 years I've been here due to the togetherness, support, and motivation the team has on and off the court." The number one player, strengthening the team, is freshman Jill Daly, who was number 2 in West Virgina's high school ten nis tournament. Rounding off the strong women's tennis team is junior Kim O'Conner and junior Sharon Meaney. Playing number one doubles are Hunter and Daly; Nickols and Black are number 2, and Oliver and O'Connor at number 3. The team, which was ranked 13 in the pre season NAIA-ITCA 14 Falls. ()hio The loam's record is 13-7. The\ iosl to Harvard f-4 and won over Carson- New man 7.2. This weekend the team goes into the Carolina Con ference Tournament seed ed third. Women's National Rank ings, has moved up to number 10. Gayle Currie, in her 11th year as head coach, is hoping to lead the team into its 11th con secutive winning season. Currie is "really pleased with the way everyone is playing and sees no reason why they can't keep it up." As their winning streak continues, the Quakers plan to reach their goals of winning Conference and District Tournaments and to be on the road again for their Bth consecutive trip to NAIA National Tourna ment in Kansas City. On March 31st, the women won over High Point College 6-3. Jill Daly won in straight sets. Today the women play tough competitor Atlantic Christian. Come out and support the Lady Quakers.
