Sports Volleyball .at 11-4 After Two Exciting Matches by Scott Genualdi The two most exciting volleyball matches since the season opener against Davidson took place last week in the Ragan Brown Fieldhouse. A five-game thriller victory over Lenoir Rhyne September 30 countered last week's drama in defeat against High Point. Like the Davidson match, the Quakers rallied from two games down to defeat Lenoir Rhyne 8-15, 15-3, 12-15, 15- 10, 15-7. The match took two hours and eightteen minutes to complete. Suzanne Zaiser's serve finally killed the Bears. Coach Gayle Currie stated, "This was a real important and emotional match for us. They knocked us out of the districts last year. It was sort of a revenge match." Guilford was outplayed by their district rivals but was able to win on critical shots by Heather Kennedy and Holly Rotalsky. Kennedy finished with 19 kills while Rotalsky ended with 14 kills. Currie also cited the net play by Lisa Rockett and the sets by Kristy Hackenbury. The match-up against High Point also started with the visitors leading two games to The GUILFORDIAN Will Return On October 31. Have A Good Fall Break! The Quakers won the fourth game. In game five, High Point rallied from a 12-13 deficit to win 15-13. The game took photo by Eric Buck forty-five minutes to complete while the entire match lasted two hours forty-seven minutes. The final score was 4-15, 15-11, 13- Suzanne Zaiser charges the net against High Point College 15, 15-10, 13-15. It was the Quakers' first loss at home. Their record now stands at 11-4. Understandably, Currie was not pleased after the match. She stated, "We have to quit getting behind the eight ball. We have to score more successive points without side-outs." "With two teams evenly matched like Guilford and High Point, you can't make those mental errors. That's what happened. We had too many people making the same mistakes." photo by Eric Buck Currie added, "I believe the match made an impression on the players." The Quakers must beat Mars Hill this Wednesday or "We won't qualify for the district tournament," said Currie. The Mars Hill match is home. Tomorrow, the Quakers face UNC-Greensboro. This weekend they travel to Washington to participate in the Gallaudet Tournament. Currie summed up the feeling of the team: "I think this was just a temporary lapse." 7
