Winning Games Mean Chance at Playoffs for Soccer
by Kathy Corcoran
The men's soccer team
improved their district record to
5-2-2 by winning 2 of 3 games
last week. They beat Atlantic
Christian College and Wingate
by 3-goal margins and lost 2-0
to El on.
The victory over ACC was a
decisive one for the Quakers, as
they outshot their opponents 30-
6, for a final score of 5-2.
Guilford took charge in the first
half with goals from co-captains
Chris Jenkins and Rob Lane as
well as one from freshman Nat
Havholm. Jenkins and Lane
asisted each others goals, while
Tony Rosica set up Havholm for
his shot.
The second half saw ACC
become more aggressive, and

Quakers October Opening Loss
by Mike Grossman
The Quakers opened the
month of October on a
discouraging note, losing to the
Emory and Henry Wasps, 31 to
17 last Saturday, October Ist.
In this game, it was not
who had the ball that mattered, it
was what the team did with it
that was important. The Quakers
had possession of the ball for
just short of half of the game,
29 minutes and 45 seconds to be
exact.
The difference in the game
was that Emory and Henry turned
their 30 minutes and 15 seconds
of possession into 31 points,
while the Quakers could only
earn 17.

they scored two goals before
Guilford was able to respond.
The Quakers did come back,
though, and on a pass from Jon-
Paul St. Jermain, Tom Bennett
nailed a low shot into the corner
from 40 yards out, making the
score 4-2.
Jenkins finished the scoring
for the Quakers by weaving
through the defense for an
unassisted goal.
The Quakers lost some
steam after this win, though, and
were undermanned going into the
match against Elon, Coach
Wally Cook said. Three starting
players were out - - Burch Wilkes
with a groin injury, Raul
Sanllehi with a ankle problem,
and Jenkins with strep throat.
Guilford took only five
victimized the Quaker defense for
230 yards, and passed for 153
more, for a total of 383. While
the Quaker defense as a team did
not play well, senior linebacker
Daniel Cole enjoyed one of the
best performances of his Guilford
career. Cole racked up 16 solo
tackles, five assists, and two
sacks creating Wasp losses of 22
yards.
Emory and Henry opened the
scoring on a 17-yard touchdown
strike from quarterback Pat
Walker to Paul Overbay at 10:06
in the first.
Guilford responded with
11:51 remaining in the half,
when senior quarterback Jay
Vannoy hit Steve Arnold with a
seven-yard touchdown pass.
Emory and Henry added 10 more
points in the half, to take a 17-7
halftime lead.
The rest of the game's
scoring came in the fourth
shots compared to Elon's 16, and
Cook says that this is indicative
of how the game went. "After
they scored their second goal 23
minutes into the match, the rest
of the game wasn't that
inspired."
Goalie Barry Fullman was
inspired, though. As of last
week, he has more saves than
any other District 26 goalie. As
Cook points out, though, "this
is both good and bad. It's great
that he makes saves, but the
opposition shouldn't be getting
that many shots in the first
place."
Fullman continued his good
record making 11 saves as the
Quakers shut out Wingate 3-0 on
Thursday. The first 25 minutes
of play were fairly even.
quarter. The Wasps scored just
eight seconds into the quarter,
when Overbay and Walker
hooked up again for another
touchdown. Guilford answered
three minutes later, when
Vannoy hit John Holloman from
five yards out. A 30-yard field
goal by Guilford freshman Shane
Handy with 9:19 remaining
brought the Quakers to within a
touchdown, 17-24.
But Quaker hopes were
crushed when Emory and Henry's
Rodney Beville scored on a 45-
yard run with 2:51 remaining.
Vannoy had a rough day,
connecting on 10 of 20 passes
for 130 yards and throwing three
interceptions. Senior
runningback Cedric Ellison
played well, rushing for 97 yards
on 15 carries.
The Quakers will try to get
back on track when they play

according to Cook. Then
Jenkins, still suffering from
strep throat, came into the game
and assisted two goals within
five minutes. The first one came
from Sanllehi at 25:43 into the
match. Three minutes later,
Jenkins passed to Lane, who put
it in the net.
