7 Quaker Baseball Loses Four In by Cory Schwartz Just when it looked like the Quaker baseball team was ready to start racking up some wins, things went sour and the team's record has slumped to four and twelve. Fol lowing a doubleheader sweep at Gardner-Webb, the team has lost their last four games, including a doubleheader loss at home to St. Andrews on Saturday, April 1. A game against High Pointon Wednes day was rained out, the Quakers' tenth washout of the year. As was the case earlier in the season, the Quakers have been plagued by a few major weaknesses. Women's Lacrosse After Week of Split Wins and Losses by Mike Grossman The women's lacrosse team split games again last week to push their mid-season record to 2-3 prior to Saturday's game against Bridgewa ter. The Lady Quakers dropped a tough 10-9 decision to Longwood before dominating Randolph Ma con Women's College last Wednes day, 9-6. In the Longwood game, Guilford took an early 2-0 lead before their opponents scored. Longwood added two more goals to the Lady Quak ers' one, resulting in a 3-3 tie at Men's Tennis Approaches End of Season by Kathy Corcoran The men's tennis team won two out of five matches during the last week and a half to make its record 6-8 as the team approaches the end of its regular season. Guilford came out strong again in the early part of the second half, scor ing twice in the first three minutes. The teams exchanged goals, until the Lady Quakers tied it up at nine apiece at 22:30. Less than one minute later, however, Longwood scored again, handing them the 10-9 victory. Sophomore Jen Harrison led the way in the scorebook by connecting on all of her shots for five goals. Freshman Katie Schmalbach notched four goals, while Caitlyn Sadlier, a They beat Appalachian, shut out Lenoir-Rhyne, and suffered losses to Presbyterian, El on and UNC-C. The overall record, however, is not a good measure of the season, accord ing to Coach Dean Mathias. He said that the team has done well, consider The error total climbed to 42, and those errors have cost the pitching staff 51 unearned runs, more than three per game. The only two consistent bright spots on the pitching staff continued to be righty juniors Brian Seagraves and Robert Duig. The two have com bined for four of the team's six complete games, three of four wins, struck out 43 batters in 55 innings, and compiled a 4.07 earned run aver age. The team batting average has climbed to .242 following an early slump, but there are still some prob senior, had twelve saves in goal. The Lady Quakers, showing a sense of rejuvenated emotion, wasted no time in attacking Randolph Ma con Women' s College four days later. They scored six goals in the first half, and added three more in the second to seal the game. The win gave the Lady Quaker's a 2-3 record. Harrison kept up her heated scor ing pace, accounting for six of the Lady Quakers' goals. Schmalbach added two goals and one assist while sophomore Lara Ramsey contributed ing the tough competition that they have faced. "We purposely went out and played a lot of nationally-ranked teams this season," Mathias said. "Our goal was to be ranked in the top 20 so we could go to Nationals." lem areas. The batters have struck out 125 times and left 115 runners stranded on base, and have only hit six homeruns. As usual, though, Tony Womack, Todd Taylor, Mike Carlson, and Chris Redmon have been the only consis tent hitters in the lineup. Womack leads the team with 65 at-bats, 18 runs scored, 22 hits, 3 triples, 11 stolen bases, and a .338 batting aver age. All three triples came in a loss to St. Andrews, and it is believed to be a school record for triples in one game. Taylor and Carlson share the team a goal. Women's lacrosse coach Pam Howe said she was encouraged by the win and was also glad lo see the return of emotional play in her Lady Quakers. "It was a key win," Howe said, "being 2-3 is really different from being 1 -4. The major difference was that we had an incredible energy. The players were very verbal, positive, and supportive of each other. They really emotionally wanted to win the game." When Atlantic Christian College cancelled last week's match with the Quakers because of "budgetary prob lems," though, they also cancelled Guilford's last shot at beating aranked team before the District tournament. Now Guilford must win the District in order to play in the National tour nament in Kansas City. According to Mathias, the District tournament is based partly on luck, as it is not flighted. "All the players from all the teams arc put into one big draw, and then you get points for each round you win," explained Mathias. "So the luck of the draw is a big part of it." Beyond luck, Mathias said that Guilford has an outside shot at win ning the tournament. To do that, they will have to beat Elon, who is cur rently ranked number eight in the nation. Individually, the team has been improving throughout the season, Mathias said. "Ricky [Fcil] has been getting stronger and he has recently beaten two nationally-ranked players. Bur roughs has also had a great season," added Mathias. Peter Burroughs plays at number five singles as a freshman. Sports lead with two homers and 11 RBl's a piece, while Taylor is tops with fouj doubles and is batting .326. Carlson and Redmon are each batting at a .295 clip. Though the team is struggling, the players remain confident. "We're starting to play a lot better together," said infielder Rob Clay, and catcher Shannon Manire concurred. "We try hard and even though our record doesn't show it, we're a good team... we're always looking to play." The Quakers have home games on April 10th and 14th, as well as a doubleheader on the 15th. Howe said that the team's new enthusiasm will help them as they enter the second half of their season. "We had yesterday, in terms of moti vation and energy, what is needed to get us through those one-goal games," she said. "But we have a lot of things we need to work on to establish consistency in our play." The women's lacrosse team will play their next home game next Monday, April 17, at 4;00 against Lynchburg. Rich Parker is recovering from two injuries as he prepares for Dis trictcompctilion. Mathias said Parker is strong enough to beat many play ers, and "when he's psychologically ready to win the big matches, he's going to be real hard to beat." According to David Lincoln, the season has been rough because of the large number of matches on the road. " We' ve played against a lot of ranked teams, but I think its prepared us for post-season," said Lincoln. "Many of the matches were very close also." Mathias agrees, "We always get real close, but we just couldn't get any breaks." If that changes in time for the District tournament and the Quakers get a little lucky in the draw, and all the team members play up to their potential, then Mathias could be on his way to Nationals in his first sea son at Guilford. The tournament is scheduled for April 14-17 at Elon College.
