SportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSportsSports Success is sweet, but short-lived Tomorrow just might not be another day What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient? -Job 6:11 FINALLY That headline blanketed the front sports page of the Roanoke Times & World- News last Sunday. Since the onset of their football series with Clemson in 1955, the Virginia Cavaliers had been stymied by the Tigers until Saturday. After 29 unsuc cessful tries, the 'Hoos defeated Clemson 20 - 7 in Charlottesville. That same afternoon, the Guilford foot ball team, an unfortunate subject of apathy in recent years, locked up with Union Col lege (Ky). What followed was the Quak ers handing the Bulldogs a resounding defeat, 31-8, and, in turn, earning their first opening game victory since 1984. Though Virginia and Guilford are sepa rated by two levels of NCAA classifica tion, they are connected in several aspects. Both football squads have been over shadowed by performances by other sports teams in theirrespective schools. In men's basketball in the 'Bo's, the Cavaliers made the NCAA tournament field seven times, twice advancing to the Final Four. Guilford's golf team won a NAIA na tional championship and its volleyball team almost annually advanced to the District tournament during this decade. Now their football teams are to be reck oned with. Virginia is a top ten team with 14 fifth-year seniors and a monkey off its back Guilford is erasing memories of its losing image and riding an emotional high. Both teams have Ail-American candidates [Shawn Moore for the Cavs and Calvin Hunter for the Quakers] in a leadership role: at quarterback. Question: Now that we're finally where we want to be, what do we do while we are here? Answer Enjoy it while it lasts. The wait 'til next year attitude is easy to maintain, but what happens when next year is this year? I began following major league baseball when I was seven years old. Since Char leston, West Virginia fielded only a minor league team, I had to search for a big league team elsewhere. And where does one begin but at the top? The Pittsburgh Pirates were headed for the World Series and so I latched on to them. I got hooked into the "We are fam-a-lee" spirit and the colorful players: Pops, Cobra, Mad Dog, the Hit Man, the Hammer, Scrap Iron, the Candy Man, Rook and Teke. After falling behind three games to one, the Buccos staged one of the most dramatic BRENDA DAVIS Orlando, FL Brenda, 17, is a middle blocker for the Guilford vol leyball team. My (however new) team had won the World Series! Iwas hyped. Then mediocrity set in. The Pirates were old, so they traded away their old players - for even older journeymen. Then the drug trials. Several Pirates and ex-Pirates were implicated in a major co caine investigation. Then the team went up for sale. There was talk that the Bucs might leave Pittsburgh. (Several area bigwigs remedied that situ ation by agreeing to share ownership of the club.) Then ... THE TRADE! Going into the 1987 season, Pittsburgh had finished in the basement for three straight years. Then - General Manager Syd (I'm so swift) Thrift knew that it was time to shake up his team, so he traded Catcher Tony (if I'm the franchise, we're in a mess) Pena to St. Louis for temperamental outfielder Andy (1 play third base like Brooks- Mel Brooks) Van Slyke, pudgy back-up catcher Mike LaValliere.andOlympic pitcher Mike Dunne. This deal was a bit lopsided. Almost immediately, the Bucs were con tenders. After winning 28 of its final 39 games that season, Pittsburgh finished a surprising second in 1988. Injuries nagged the Pirates in 'B9, so they were not picked to do well this season. Finally, everything has fallen into place and my Buccos are just three weeks away from the playoffs again. My favorite player, leftfielder Barry Bonds, is racking up MVP numbers, starting pitcher Doug Drabek has been unbelievably nasty to hitters this summer, and Manager Jim Leyland has handled his team brilliantly since April. But how long can this last? Next season they start all over again and this year will be forgotten before long. Bonds wants to play for a team out west and teammate Bobby Bonilla might follow him. I can't worry about that though, the Pirates are in first; next year is this year; the future is now. The Guilford football Quakers are 1-0 and have a promising future, but as I said, the future is now - don't miss out on their success story. Young people, enjoy your youth. Be happy while you are still young. Do what you want to do and follow your heart's desires, but remember that God is going to judge you for whatever you do. Do not let anything worry you or cause you pain. You are not going to be young very long. -Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 f K— >—
