Athletic Conference at 2-0-2.
Hampden-Sydney entered the game as
the highest scoring team in the ODAC and
was tied for first place with Virginia
Wesleyan. The Quaker defense continued
to play well, holding the high-powered
offense to just 4 shots on goal and 9 total
shots.
Goalkeeper Will Grimes said of the
defensive play, "The defense played ex
cellent. Nat Havholm took charge in the
back and Scott Saxton, who was filling in
for Scott Haymond, shut his man down
completely."

Goldsmith had to make adjustments to
counter the Tiger off-side trap. The Quak
ers started to attack the trap and make runs
from the defense.
The adjustments paid off in the 63rd
minute when Trevor Pace broke free out-

goal post. Jason Wolff took a shot off of
the rebound which was deflected by the
Tiger goalie to Ron Wimberly, who calmly
put the Quakers ahead 1-0.

Coach Goldsmith feels that his team
plays best when they attack both offen
sively and defensively and feels Dial the
Quakers need to attack for all 90 minutes to
be successful.
Duke University ended the Quaker
unbeaten streak at five with a 5-1 victory
last Wednesday. The Blue Devils used
their superior team speed and ball control
to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
"We came out nervous and it showed in
the first half," stated Goldsmith alter the
game.
The Quakers settled down in the second
half. Trevor Pace put the Crimson and
Gray on the score board in the 57th minute
off of an indirect free kick from 25 yards
out.
Charlie Johannes stepped over the ball
as Wimberly laid it to the right of the wall
where Pace ran onto it and rocketed a shot
into the top right corner. The Duke keeper
was able to get a hand on the shot but
couldn't deflect it wide of the goal.
The goal was Trevor's team-leading third
of the season.
The game was attended by approximately
100 loyal Guilford fans. "We would like to
thank everyone who made the trip to Duke
and we appreciate all of the noise you
made. It felt like we were playing a home
game," said Goldsmith.
Freshman goalie Chris Reed replaced
Will Grimes for the second half, making
three saves. The loss dropped Grimes'
record to 3-1-2. Grimes became the starter
when Lance Anthony broke his nose against
Lenoir-Rhyne.
Guilford played Methodist, ranked 18th
in NCAA Division 111, this past Saturday.
This week the Quakers will put their un
beaten ODAC record on the line against
Roanoke on Tuesday. The Quakers de
feated the Maroons 1-0 last season. The
Quakers will travel to Elon on Thursday
and return home for a Saturday game with
Washington College.
