THE GUILFORDIAN

Despite a rash of injuries to top players,
Guilford's women's basketball team came
back strong to win two close Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) games last
week.
On January 28, the Quakers beat
Randolph-Macon Woman's College for the
second time this season, 55-54. On February
1, Guilford led all the way and defeated
Emory & Henry College 66-61.
The Quakers are now 12-6 overall, 8-1 in
the ODAC West Division.
Senior forwards Laura Klingseisen and
Deana Pingley, both starters, missed the
Randolph-Macon Woman's game because
of injuries suffered in the Quaker's loss to
Bridgewater last week. Without those two,
Guilford struggled against a Wildcat team
that it had beaten by 47 points on January 21.
But sophomore center Brenda Davis had
another outstanding game for the Quakers,
scoring 21 points, including the winning
basket in the last ten seconds, and pulling
down nine rebounds.
Against Emory & Henry, the Quakers
built a 13-point halftime lead only to see the
Wasps come to within three with four min
utes remaining. Once again Davis performed
in the clutch, scoring six straight points,
with four of those coming on putbacks of
offensive rebounds. The Wasps missed four
shots in the last 1:45 to help the Quakers to
Quakers trounce Randolph-Macon, but suffer two defeats

The Guilford men's basketball team was
looking forward to a home stand of three
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
games last week, but the Greensboro con
tests turned into disappointment as the Quak
ers dropped two by a total of six points.
The Quakers lost to Lynchburg 77-75 in
overtime on January 28. Last Saturday,
Guilford finally got a big win in beating
Randolph-Macon College 70-48. Returning
for a Sunday game, the Quakers gave away
a 71-67 game to Virginia Wesleyan Col
lege.
Guilford is now 9-8 overall, 5-6 in the
ODAC.
Guilford has had trouble winning the close
games this season, and that tendency was
evident last week. Against Lynchburg, the
Quakers had the Hornets on the ropes in the
closing minutes, only to miss six of 11 free
throws down the stretch. That allowed
Lynchburg to send the game into overtime
with a three-pointer with four seconds left.
During a nip-and-tuck overtime, Hornet
forward Daryle Dooms hit a layup with 18
seconds remaining, leaving Guilford with
plenty of time to score. The Quakers never
took a shot, turning the ball over as time ran
out, and handing Lynchburg the win.
The Quakers routed Randolph-Macon on
Saturday, extending a 15-point halftime lead
to as much as 26 before winning by 22.
their eighth conference win of the year.
The two Guilford wins set up a key show
down with Roanoke College last Tuesday.
The Maroons lead the ODAC West with an
8-0 record, and the game most likely settled
the top seed from the west in the ODAC
Tournament later on in February.
Tonight, the Quakers entertain a good
Hollins College team at Ragan-Brown
Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Guilford escaped with
a 47-40 win in Roanoke, Va. on January 18.
Quaker Notes: The Quakers have relied on
strong defense this season, limiting their
opponents to only 59.8 points per game,
third in the ODAC....Guilford is a pretty
good rebounding team, pulling down 2.3
more than its opponents....Brenda Davis has
risen to second in the ODAC in scoring and
rebounding and is likely to stay there for
awhile. She is scoring 18.5 points per game
and pulling down 10.9 rebounds....Davis is
second in the league in field goal percentage
while Deana Pingley is fourth in free throw
percentage....Guilfordhashitonlyone three
pointer all year, that one by Carolyn Doss
against Christopher Newport....Guilford
looks to be in good shape for a top-two seed
and home court advantage in the ODAC
Tournament first round. The Quaker's near
est rival in the West Division is Lynchburg,
which is two games back. Guilford plays the
Hornets at home in the penultimate game of
the season.
Guilford held the Yellow Jackets to only 28
percent (15 of 53) from the field and
outrebounded Randolph-Macon 42-26.
Senior forward Brad McCorkle had 15
points to lead Guilford while sophomore
guard Andre Ricketts had 14.
Virginia Wesleyan entered as one of the
top three teams in the league but may have
been ripe for an upset after enduring a long
road trip and losing to Emory & Henry the
day before. It certainly looked that way, as
Guilford took control late in the first half
and led by as many as five throughout the
second.
The Marlins hit two three-pointers in the
last four minutes to get back in the game, and
then took a 69-67 lead with one minute to go
on a Scott Spruill offensive rebound and
score.
That minute left plenty of time for the
Quakers to tie it up, but they committed
three straight turnovers, failing to take ad
vantage of two Marlin turnovers. Guilford
was forced to foul in the closing seconds,
and two Virginia Wesleyan free throws pro
vided the final four-point margin.
The Quakers faced a tough Hampden-
Sydney team Wednesday. The Tigers beat
Guilford 73-72 in overtime in Greensboro
on January 9.
Guilford returns home tomorrow to play
Washington & Lee at Ragan-Brown
Fieldhouse. Game time begins at 7:30 p.m.

Sports Quote of the Week
"I did not know that."
—Chris Myers, ESPN Commentator
Quaker Notes: The Quakers have played
some close games this year, and are 5-5 in
games decided by five points or less. In the
ODAC, however, Guilford is only 1-4 in
those games, the lone win coming in a 98-94
overtime win over Emory & Henry....Guil
ford is now 1-2 in overtime games in 1991-
92.... The Quakers have seven remaining
ODAC games, and five of those are against
the top-five teams in the league. After trav
elling to Hampden-Sydney, which is tied for
first with a 9-3 record, the Quakers must
play at Emory & Henry, also 9-3, at Virginia
Wesleyan (7-3), and then host Bridgewater
(9-3) and Roanoke (7-5).... The only breath
ers appear to be next Saturday's game against
Washington & Lee and a February 15 game
at Randolph-Macon....Paul Ferrell remains
the top free throw shooter (90.9 percent) and
assist man (5.4 average) in the ODAC. Last
week, he was ranked third nationally in
NCAA Division 111 in free throw
shooting.„. Brad McCorkle was eighth in
the ODAC last week in scoring, while Ferrell
was 12th....McCorkle is also accurate at the
line, and was ranked fifth in the conference
last week. As a team, the Quakers are shoot
ing 72.9 percent from the foul line.... Michael
Wright has picked up his game in the last
four contests. The senior forward has aver
aged 13 points and 6.5 rebounds since an 18-
point win over Eastern Mennonite a week
ago.
