12 THE GUELFORDIAN Munich Chamber Orchestra next ArtsETC Guest Timothy Kircher Guest Writer Attention WQFS listeners and all music fans: true alternative music will be per formed live in Dana Auditorium next Sun day, March 1, at 8 p.m. As part of Guilford's ArtsETC Series, the Munich Chamber Or chestra will play a concert of classical mu sic. The evening's offering includes works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as the lesser-known composers Franz Richter and Helmut Eder. The program's centerpiece is Franz Joseph Haydn's Flute Concerto in D major, which will spotlight the talents of the Italian flutist Andrea Griminelli. Under the direction of conductor Hans Stadlmair, the Munich Chamber Orchestra has been regarded as one of music's finest chamber orchestras for more than thirty years. In addition to its concert season in Munich, the orchestra has toured through out the world. This year marks its seventh visit to the U.S. Ed Lowe, Dana Professor of Music, heard the group perform last semester in Munich. He called it a, "fine chamber orchestra that achieved in its performance impeccable en semble playing that most instrumental groups seldom attain, and yet without losing any of the expressive qualities of the music." Andrea Griminelli's talents as a flutist of classical music have been widely respected. He has studied with the flute's two modern masters, James Galway and Jean-Pierre Rampal. Galway, in fact, has called Griminelli, "the most exciting young flutist to burst upon the musical scene in many years." Having performed in the past with the Berlin Symphony andLuciano Pavorotti, he is currently on a two-month tour with the Munich Chamber Orchestra. This concert is the fourth in the ArtsETC series. ArtsETC aims to provide Guilford's students and community with a diverse se lection of professional artistry. This year's schedule of the Mamas and the Papas, the Chicago Actors Ensemble, and most re cently the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble has drawn a large audience. ArtsETC is hoping for another full house for the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Remember Sunday, March 1.
