Bost *t nh Saums SPORTS Men's squad returns key members from 8-7 team Butch Maier Sports Editor With 12 consecutive winning seasons, don't look for any dropoff in the 1992 edi tion of the Guilford College men's lacrosse team. The Quakers lost just two players to graduation off last year's 8-7 team, and the offense returns fully intact. THE PRE-SEASON "We're progressing slowly, but surely," Goldsmith said. "We have a lot of new players who are relatively inexperienced, so the teaching aspect of it takes time." WORK ETHIC "I thought last year's team worked its butt off," Goldsmith said. 'This year's team is even surpassing lat year's. It has a lot to do with leadership." That leadership starts with the Quaker's tri-captains: seniors Dave Brown and Matt ParkerandjuniorDaryleßost. Butitdoesn't end there. 'The best thing [about this team] is if you make a mistake," the head coach said,"some other guy on the team will tel you how to fix it. I don't have to come over and show you—we have coaches on the field." "After a year with me, you know what I expect," Goldsmith said. LAST YEAR "We were 8-7 last year, which was phe nomenal for us," Goldsmith said. 'There were only three games I thought we defi nitely should have won." THE OFFENSE "We wanna control the ball on offense more." This is Goldsmith's intent. And with the attack he has at his fingertips, chances are the Quakers will be in control. "I have all the confidence in the world in our four attackmen," Goldsmith said. Brown led the nation in goal-scoring last season with 60, breaking a school record, including 13 in the Ist two games of 1991. Brown also had 27 assists and should power the Guilford offense again. MIDDIES "We have two extremely strong midfield lines," the coach said. "And out third line will see a lot of action." Forming the Quaker's middle line is Parker, Kenny Saums and Bost, who Gold smith sees as key. "Daryle's improvement from last year to this year has been incredible," the coach said. "Not just his stick-handling, but his knowledge of the game has improved tre mendously." Saums and Parker contributed 46 and 37 goals goals, respectively, last season. Youth is served in Guilford's second line, with freshman Ousmane Greene joining February 21, 1992 sophomores Wesley MerrittandShea Varge. Goldsmith likes what he sees in the new comer Greene. "Ousmane is quick," he said. "He's not fast, but he has quickness." THE DEFENSE "As an outsider, one might look at Guil ford College lacrosse and see defense as a weak part," Goldsmith said. "I think the team feels a need to prove the outsiders are wrong." One reason the Quakers will be able to prove otherwise is the play of sophomore Pat Tully. "I have, and his teammates have, tremen dous faith in him," Goldsmith said. "Every time he goes one on one with somebody, we feel like he can take the ball away." Other probable starters in 1992 include Jamie Whitehead, Jon Kallen and Evan Smith. "Our team speed is much improved," Goldsmith said. "And Jamie Whitehead... I'm tellin' ya, I think his speed has doubled." In goal, junior George Bullock and Nate Broehl are surprising. "They're both working their tails off," Goldsmith said. "So far, they're doing a better than expected job." Key back-ups include Sean McNeill and Anthony Bascone, a freshman. "Anthony is laid back in practice, but intense in the game," the coach said. Much-improved defensive back-up Todd Wittmer will vie for playing time. THE SCHEDULE "Our schedule is probably one of the best in the country," Goldsmith said. Roanoke, Washington & Lee and Hampden-Sydney head a list of five prob ably top-20-caliber opponents Guilford will face. "For this year's team... we have very high expectations," Goldsmith said. "Butasmuch as we have improved, all our opponents have improved also. "Last year we upset Roanoke. This year, Roanoke is ten times as good as they were lat year. St. Mary's, a team we came back to defeat 23-15, hasa lot of experienced junior college transfers coming in. Greensboro College had 13 players a year ago and have 27 now. They're gonna be real good—it's gonna be some game." THE OUTLOOK "Against tough teams, we're gonna have to do well on ground balls and play better than expected on defense," the coach said. "One hundred percent individual effort comes together 1000 percent team effort. Everybody's gotta be at their best" "I expect more wins than last year," Gold smith said. "With a few lucky breaks, even more."
