February 21,1992 Special feature: Spin Doctors Louisa Spaventa Staff Writter It didn't seem like it would happen, but it did. After much frustration and sweat, Matt Rudzinski and I held a spur-of-the-moment interview with Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors during which we were both accused of being nervous. Chris is certainly an opin ionated guy and likes to take interviews into his own hands. If you were one of the numbers that packed yourself into Stemberger on Jan. 31 to catch these guys and the cameo from Papa John, you saw how off the wall Chris can be, especially with a sword in his hand. If you missed the live interview on WQFS or want a closer look, here's what he has to say for himself: Chris (on a tangent): We want to be a wicked, wicked band and travel all around the world. This music is American music. It comes from the blues and rock'n'roll. Be fore that it comes from Africa. The idea of music is that it travels around the world. The idea of our band is to spread possibilities. Q: What music do you listen to? Chris: I like to read literature a lot. I tend to listen to whatever I end up hearing on the radio or other people are listening to. And then the stuff I really think about is the books I read. I like to read the classics: Homer, Aristophanes... Q: What's your favorite type of audience? Chris: I like audiences that are extraordi nary, or beautiful, or attentive. We play some stuff that is sort of cerebral and ballad like. You see these guys who are terrified that someone's going to point across the room and be like, "Look at that guy groov ing over there! He's a homosexual!" I think there's a lot of war-like sentiments going on in the country right now. Q: What inspired the lyrics to "Jimmy Olsen's Blues"? Applications for the 1992-93 editorships for: • The Quaker (yearbook) • The Piper (literary magazine) • The Guilfordian are available from February 24- March 6 at the Founders Hall Information Desk. Get involved!! Chris: I was staying at Brown [Univer sity] and I was eating in the cafeteria which I had clandestinely snuck into through the kitchen. And I was sort of a loser that winter: you know—begging, borrowing, stealing pretty much everything I was eating and where I was staying. There was this girl sitting on the other side of the cafeteria. I had a low self-image at the time. I remarked to myself that she looked like Lois Lane and I wasn't feeling particularly confident about any sort of affair with her. And the concept was bom. Q: How do you pick the songs to play onstage? Chris: The interesting thing about the band is when we first put it together we lived in New York City where it's not so easy to make a living. None of us wanted to work day jobs so we had to be able to play five nights a week in one city without wearing people out We decided to play a different set every night. We try to come up with new segue ways and weird tricks to do. Chances are (when you see us) you'll hear something you've never heard before. We always wanted to be improvisational. Q: There's a lot of positive energy on Pocket Full of Kryptonite... Chris: No one in the band had ever made a studio record before. It was like being five years old in a candy store and everything is free. I was having crazy dreams. I had this dream that the guy who engineered [the record] was a translator for angels. The angels had this language and the very lowest gutter-talk of their language was the highest poetry that humans can speak. Q: You're aiming for the individual? Chris: I guess we're sort of in the spirit of improvement and exploration. Bravery of the soul. Request Spin Doctors songs on WQFS. The shiny new number is 316-2444.
