THE GUILFORDIAN
Despite 'ugly' play, men's lacrosse wins 3 of 4

'That was UGLY" were the words Coach
Goldsmith used to describe his team's loss
to Lynchburg. "In my three years here we've
NEVER played as bad as we that
game."
When asked about his team's much-im
proved second half performance, he replied,
"What does a good second half matter when
you're down 8-1 after the first five minutes
of the game? In the four games that we have
most recently played, three and a half of
those we played with an almost nonexistent
defense."
The men' s lacrosse team, however, can be
proud that they have gone 3-1 in their last
four games. No matter how ugly, the
Lynchburg game was their only loss since
April 8 when the series began.
The Quakers played crosstown rival
Greensboro College April 8. The Quakers
won 19-13. Matt Parker scored five goals
and contributed one assist, while Jamie
Kittelberger had three goals and four assists.
David Brown finished the day with four
goals, while Kenny Saums put in three goals
and helped out with two assists. Chris Lang
threw in two goals and had three assists.
Ousmane Greene added one goal and one
assist, while Alex Gorman also added a
goal. Goalie George Bullock had 18 saves;
11 of those came in the second half.
"That game started off slow," said Daryle
Bost "The defense was clicking. I don't
think we played very well that game. The
only thing I remember is that they were
talking junk."
Women's tennis struggles in NCAA Tournament

The women's tennis team is now 15-4
overall, three of their four losses coming in
the last week or so, and 8-1 in the ODAC,
their only loss coming from powerhouse
Washington & Lee.
Against Elon on April 8, they won 8-1.
Emily King, at the top seed, Cari Peterson at
second singles, #3 Terri Mancuso, #4 Jamie
Campbell, and #6 Trudy Buckingham were
all successful in their singles matches. The
#5 spot Hanako Ibaragi fell to her opponent,
but came back to win in her #3 doubles
match with Buckingham. The #1 duo of
King and Mancuso and the #2 duo of Peter
son and Campbell were also successful at
doubles.
"The Elon match was fun, but they were
missing their top two spots—so we had
good matches but not that tough," said Peter
son.
King said, "The team was not as strong,
not as deep as usual. Our #1 doubles was
good competition."

against. On April 10, they played Rhodes of
Memphis, Tenn. (a school with the same
enrollment as Guilford that actually costs
more: $19,500 a year). The Lady Quakers
won 8-1. The next day they played Univer
sity of the South, a team that is ranked 12th
in NCAA Division 111. They had two singles
canceled due to rain. Sewanee won 5-2, but
with the cancellations, the score might eas
ily have been 5-4. King and Peterson were
the only singles winners.
Against Mary Washington, the Quakers
felt the increased competition. Peterson
pulled out the only win, and an impressive
one at that—Mary Washington is ranked
first in the nation; Peterson won in straight
sets: 6-2,6-4. The # 1 doubles match was not
finished due to rain.
"The Atlanta trip went really well," said
Mancuso. "The competition really was
tough, but we had some close matches against
University of the South. It was our first time
this season against competition this tough.
If we had more like that earlier, we might
have done better."
"Now I have a very good chance," said
King. "It looks promising for me [going to
the nationals]. I played well against Univer
sity of the South. On Sunday, I played well.

added an assist.
On April 15 it was D-Day. The Quakers
lost to Lynchburg by and "ugly" score of 20-
15. "The defense was nonexistent," said
Bost. Scorers were Brown with four goals
and three assists, Greene with two goals and
one assist, and Kittelberger with one goal
and an assist. Bullock had 19 saves.

I played a 3 1/2 hour match. It was tough,
and I lost it but a very close score. Overall I
was happy about the weekend. We, as a
team, were able to raise our games to a
higher level of competition."
On April 14, the Quakers won, despite
using two substitutes. Catherine Herring
and Tricia Allman filled in at the number 3
doubles spot
The Washington & Lee match on April 17
was a disappointing one for the Quakers.
The ODAC title rested on the outcome of the
match. W&L came out on top in the end, but
not after the Quakers put up a good fight.
The match lasted for six hours. In eighty
degree weather, six hours is agonizingly
long for a tennis match. After the singles
competition, the score was deadlocked at
three. Singles winners were Peterson,
Mancuso, and Ibaragi.
Peterson now holds an impressive season
record of 18-0. She attributes her support
group for helping her go so far. 'The support
has been great: my parents, Clarence
[lnscore], and all the fans who come out to
watch us."
After King's and Mancuso's #1 doubles
match ended, the score stood at 4-3, Quak
ers' favor. The #3 doubles dropped their
there around 4:00. We warmed up for only
ten or fifteen minutes. We got pumped up to
play quickly. That may have hurt us, be
cause we weren't quite ready to play. After
they started scoring we thought we could
still come back, but we had dug a hole too
deep for ourselves."
The third game in the series came April 18
against Randolph-Macon. "In the second
half of that game we played well defen
sively," said Goldsmith. 'The entire team
picked it up another notch. We played
better all over the field."
Scoring for the Quakers was widespread
throughout the team. Saums laid in five
goals and had an assist, Kittelberger put in
four goals and passed out two assists, both
Brown and Parker put in three goals and
handed out two assists, and Greene threw
in four goals and lead the team with three
assists. Other contributors were Boonin
with two goals, McNeil with two assists,
and Tully with a goal. Bullock had a nice
game, finishing with 16 saves for the day.
Says Bost about the game, "It went back
and forth in the first half, but in the second
half we took over. Defense played better
in the three previous games. Our offense
really clicked. Michael Boonin really
stepped up his game and Ousmane came
on strong for us. We went all out; I'm sure
we crushed 'em in groundballs. We wanted
to dominate. We didn't let anything slip
away from us."
When we asked if he wished that the
men's lax team had an ODAC tourney, he
had a few words to say, 'This year? No, not
this year. Heh! Heh! Next year I might want
one. This year I'm ready to play golf."
match to W&L. The pressure intensified for
Peterson and Campbell. The match went
back and forth, but the duo ended up falling
to W&L in a disappointing loss: 5-7,7-5,6-
2.
"The loss was disappointing," said King,
"I think we had some good clutch perfor
mances from some people. I lost, but it
shouldn't affect my chances of a national
berth."
Peterson said of W&L, "Compared to our
other conference opponents, W&L is like
night and day. We had a lot of pressure
because they had been to nationals for the
last 12 years in a row. They were really
good, and they did beat us, but we may see
'em in the ODAC tourney."
Said Mancuso, "It was first time thing,
playing them, and now we know how they
play. It's disappointing, but those are the
breaks—a lot of individuals had good single
matches." This is Mancuso final season as a
Quaker. "I'm really gonna miss it—when
you start off the season you think, 'I have a
whole season ahead of me,' but the next
thing ya know, it's over. This year we had
more team bonding because of our many
away matches when we spent a lot of time
together as a team."
