He explored the seven-day i cycle as an anomaly, pointing out j that the week, unlike the day and year, is not based on any astro nomical pattern. In the culmination of his speech, he expounded upon the personal renewal afforded by a kept Sabbath. He specified that this day could be kept in any tradition or even secularly and in a flash of foresight expressed con cern that his intent could be mis construed as "missionary." Security hires as sistant director Security and Safety has hired Kimberly S. Joris to fill its assis tant director position. The position has been open since last year, when Mary Ann Weedon moved up to replace then Director Bob White, who retired. The meeting started with the Executive Council members pre senting their weekly reports. President Jen Hill expressed her concern over the many absences at the Sept. 23 meeting. Vice President Jamie Whitehead announced that the Judicial Review Task Force is busy setting their agenda and should be ready to go when stu dents return from fall break. Secretary Brian Sugioka ex pressed the importance of sena tors going to their Res. hall coun cil meetings. Senators were also reminded that attending these meetings is required for senators who representees.' halls. . Much of the meeting was a News This Week ers" video. Bridget VandeWalle, representing the group, was on hand to answer questions. The group's initial request went through Budget Committee where the proposed budget was exam ined. Budget Committee's recom mendation to Senate was to fund no more than $1,068 for the trip. The trip's budget called for a total of $1,668. The S6OO cut recom mended by Budget Committee was in the area of food, where $750 had been asked for. The food that needs to be bought by the group will be partially sub sidized, however, by food dona tion 0 , frc.T Marriott. ... Some senators felt that those who go on the trip should at least pay for 9:00 FLAG meeting. Thursday, October 15 pm 4:00 "Spirituality and the Prison Experience" with Jen nifer Haines of the Catholic Worker Community. 9:00 Quaker Concerns meeting food. VandeWalle mentioned that if students are forced to pay for their food, some of them would not be able to go. The group has already raised S6OO in donations to help pay for the trip, and some Senators felt that the amount of money raised should be subtracted from any amount given by Senate. Towards the end of discussion it was agreed that the project was important and that more money should be given for food, but spe cific amounts were not discussed. One idea was to give the group 50 cents for every dollar they fund raise. The Senate committee chairs gave brief descriptions of their committee's activities.
