Bobember 19,1993 Turkey trot cooked to perfection Jason A. Caplain Staff Writer Saturday, November 13, on a warm, sunny afternoon, the Guil ford College Sport Management Society in cooperation with the American Heart Association, sponsored the First Annual Turkey Trot at the scenic Greensboro County Park. The fun run/walk and the 5K were enjoyable to all 120 participants, a large slice being from the community. But for the students that were fortunate enough to attend, the rewards were great. The race was "very profession ally handled," said Senior Derrick Lily, who ran at a good clip and came in fourth in the fun run. Professionally handled it was, having a live DJ, an assortment of food and beverages, an official race announcer and some fabulous prizes. All in attendance were dazzled by Randy Smith (the DJ) as he filled in dead air with his tunes, awed the crowd with his witty behavior and gave encour agement when the racers finished. The danishes, bagels, muffins, fruits and beverages were provided Volleyball reflects on season Sarah A. Woodard Staff Writer The Lady Quakers have returned from their trip to Cleveland, Ohio and are now reflecting on the past and looking to the future. Although the trip to the Division 111 National Tournament in Cleve land was not very successful, Se nior co-captain Brenda Davis said that "it was great that we went to nationals.. .only thirty-four teams got to go so we were very happy to get that far." Despite the national tournament, the team had an outstanding sea son that they can be proud of. "I don't think the loss at nationals should take away from our perfor mance all year," said Sophomore Alissa Pioli. The Quakers started their season off as they were expected to, with domination of the Greensboro College Tournament. However, the next weekend the ladies slipped as they lost at the Marietta Tourna ment. Then the ODAC season started, and there were no more slips. The team rolled over every conference opponent to end with a perfect record. "Overall, I thought we had .JJI . ~l. ■ H' HI 1 . This team was expected to con trol the ODAC, and they did. The team's most exciting game of the season occurred when the ladies met undefeated Bridgewater. The match went to five games, but the Quakers came out on top. Sophomore Ann Gaillard said, "I think that we improved tons more than last year." The team grew in intensity and depth. This growth led them to sweep the ODAC Championships and get a bid to nationals. Luck was a Quaker this season as trainer Paige Simpson pointed out. "The team was very lucky because they had few major injuries." The team looses three seniors: Brenda Davis, Jen Caltrider, and Tricia Allman. These ladies were forceful leaders and their talent will be missed. Davis fulfilled a personal dream by getting to go to nationals and of the team she said, "I love them to death and I will miss them a whole lot." Allman said, "The season was successful and I enjoyed the team as a whole." The future looks bright for the Lady Quakers. As the team finishes up such an excellent season, they have %\)t (gutUorbian a drinking cup, some great memo ries and, best of all, an 18-pound turkey to show for his impressive finish. He said the turkey has been already cooked and will be gobbled shortly. Lily said that if he was around next year he would attend 'The Trot" and encourages others who have the opportunity to do so. But wait, things will get better, Tom pros assures. He said that "last Saturday's Turkey Trot was merely the foundation for things to come. For now on things can only im prove." He explained that the Sport Management Society and Dr. Pe ter Farmer's Introduction to Sport Management only had 45 days to put on the event, which makes the feat even more impressive. Hopefully next year, with better planning and more advertising, the amount of participants will thrust up to the 300 level. Tompros expressed disappoint ment with the student turnout, say ing that "it's disheartening to see a lack of backing from the student body, especially in something that is erected from the ground up by students. But don't fret," Tompros continues, "they'll always be next year." Photo by Reagan Hopkins proven again who's boss to their ODAC opponents. 13 Photo by Rob Davidson
