Men's basketball falls to Lynchburg TIM FORBES staff writer Guilford's men's basketball team suffered its fifth consecutive loss on Monday, falling to Lynchburg College 74-61. Early mistakes hurt the Quakers: they had 12 first-half turnovers. Despite this Guilford went into the locker room at half-time down by only four points. However, Lynchburg never surrendered the lead. The second half proved disap pointing to Guilford as a late 11-2 run ended the Quakers' hopes for a comeback. "We need to be mind ful of how important every posses sion is. We can't give up easy lay ups when they [Lynchburg] are shooting so poorly," said Head Coach Jack Jensen. January 26, 1996 led in the second half, they hustled after every loose ball, working hard under the boards. Defensively, the Quakers had problems. Guilford's most effec tive defenseman, Chris Kosiba, had to sit out because of foul trouble, and Lynchburg's Otis Thorton 111 took advantage of this. Thorton had 21 second half points, ending the game with 35 points. Coach Jensen felt Guilford did not execute his game plan, which would have put Lynchburg on the free-throw line, taking advantage of their low free-throw average. One good thing that came out of the game was Tharon Howard's strong playing. He might be the ODAC's best freshman, and Mon day night he had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Howard led Guilford in both categories. sports SPORTS SCHEDULE It's time to take out unnecessary roughness AMY BROACH staff writer Imagine: a three hundred pound heavy-weight barreling at you with a helmet, pads, and cleats. You have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and your blockers are still at the line of scrimmage waiting for the ball to be snapped. Then, you are hit! You fall backwards. Your feet are floating off the grass. Your eyes squint waiting for the moment of impact. Boom! You open your eyes and expect to see the trainer waiting to scrape you up. To your surprise, you can still feel every limb. You begin to move, and once reaching your feet, You are invited to attend the Guilford College Sttudemf Loan FTULIMI Auction February Bth, 1996 Sternburger Auditorium Silent Auction 6 p.m. Open Auction 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served Any questions? The reason: you landed on a grass playing field. Now, to the non-football play ing type, any kind of tackle would be flattening. However, tackling is not a big event to the guys that pound each other around every day. Unless it is done on astro-turf, green plastic laid out over con crete. I turn my head every time a player is pummeled to the hard concrete floor. I think "Isn't there something that can be done?" I believe something will be done. After the incident in the NFC Championship game, something will have to be done. For those of you who missed it, here is a quick update. An assis- tant coach for the Green Bay Pack ers was knocked unconscious and placed in intensive care after be ing knocked to the ground during an out-of-bounds tackle. He suffered serious head inju ries. He was not wearing a helmet, but so what? You can't tell me that every once in a while a player doesn't see little birdies after hit ting the pavement. And we wonder why former NFL players have one of the short est life spans on earth. Even though Guilford has not joined the ranks of other colleges and placed an astroturf field for our players to play on, think about landing on concrete the next time you watch a football game.
