Unmasking a different side of Guilford BEN THORNE features editor Have you struggled in darkness, afraid to show your art to others? Do you feel the need to com municate with people more inti mately than possible in daily con versation? If so, then perhaps the lighthouse can guide your way. the lighthouse, the literary magazine of Guil ford College, will begin accepting submissions of poetry, prose, and art from all stu dents starting Sept. 16-23. For veteran Guilford students it should be noted that a few changes have been made in for mat, and the light house has two new editors, ~~® 1 jj| Courtney Crummett and Mollie Howey. Both sophomores, this marks the first time either has worked for the lighthouse and they exude en thusiasm over their first issue. Crummett, the editor-in-chief, said "I wish more people knew and ap preciated the lighthouse. I think it's important to express yourself and then witness it" Howey, the art editor, is in charge of selecting and placing art in addition to helping Crummett with the magazine's layout. Art September 13,1996 submissions became a continuing problem for the lighthouse, but Howey, an art major, hopes using her link with the department will encourage fellow artist's to submit art. "I'm doing this [editing the lighthouse] because last it year it took them forever to put the maga zine together. Since I'm an art majorl can talk to Adele Wayman (of the art dept.) and call a meet- ing for majors" Howey said. The biggest changes from last year include eight pages of art printed on glossy stock paper, some appearing in full color, and a three issue format. Also, an over abundance of is sues was ordered last year, some of which are still ly- ing conspicuously around campus. To correct this, Crummett and Howey intend to order fewer magazines. Staff positions for the light house, including advertising, lay out, and selection are still open, so keep an eye out for flyers with more information, and remember that submissions will be accepted from September 16-23.
