Founders Hall The Guilfordian news Stoneburner honored with excellence award JOE BAGBY staff writer On Friday, March 7, the Greensboro Commission on the Status of Women honored eight local women. These women won the Woman of Achievement Award, given to an outstanding woman in the fields of business, health, media, government service, education, religion, community service and the arts. Who won the award for excel lence in education? Guilford College's own Carol Stoneburner. Serving in two administrative capacities—the Director of Fac ulty Development and Coordina tor of Women's Studies — Stoneburger also teaches. While most classes are taught by one pro fessor, Stoneburner teaches her Women's Studies class with her husband, John. The two have taught together for 15 years and have been noted for their excellent collaboration. Forty-nine women were nomi nated for the eight awards, so Stoneburner, who has been teach ing at Guilford for 25 years, was in a competitive race. Maritza Almeida, professor of Spanish, nominated her. A number of other Guilford faculty members wrote recommendations for her, and on March 7th, before a crowd of 150, Stoneburner received the award, an eight-inch pewter-engraved plate. College-age Quakers to gather for weekend at GC AICF REID writer North Carolina Yearly Meeting and Guilford College will host a gathering for college-age Quakers. This conference will happen on March 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. The hope is to get students from all over to bond with other Quak ers from other campuses. North Carolina Yearly Meeting and Guil ford College have advertised as a Quaker web of students from UNC-G, Western Carolina, Salem, NC A&T, Guilford, ECU, HPU, UNC-C, Catawba, Elon, and many more colleges. With students from a wide va riety of schools invited, the con ference attenders should provide a very diverse group of Quakers. March 21,1997 "Carol Stoneburner is a remarkable woman. She is a men tor, a mediator, a teacher, a friend, a companion, and an inde fatigable worker. . .As coordinator of Women's Studies, Carol has been a force that made the women's studies major a dream come true. . . In addition to the major, Carol has been instru mental in helping educate men and women about sexual of fenders and has given support and help to any victims in this category. Students seek out Carol as a mediator, a teacher, a mentor, a confidant, a friend... It is with great pride that we nominate Carol Stoneburner for the 1996 Woman of Achieve ment Award." - from Maritza Almeida's Woman of Achievement award nomination for Carol Stoneburner Maritza Almeida says of Stoneburner, "She has been a back bone of the Women's Studies pro gram " Almeida had nothing but praise for the award-winner, re marking, "Carol had worked with Faculty Development. She spon sors many programs that have helped the faculty. She works with the junior faculty. She helps make their transition to Guilford smoother. She establishes a group of support. Carol really makes the faculty feel welcome at Guilford." Other faculty members strongly supported Stoneburner's nomina tion, as well. According to Almeida, " I asked several faculty members here to write in on her behalf, and they wrote in immedi ately. You could see the tremen dous respect the faculty felt for her." Hanna Passmore co-clerk of Quaker concerns said, "I can't wait to meet Quaker students from oilier schools." Lisa Lundeen con tinued, "The diverse group is im portant for getting a wider variety of opinions. Quaker Leadership Scholars has gotten in a habit of talking about the same thing all the time." Max Carter says, "This confer ence is exciting because it is the first time that North Carolina yearly meeting and Guilford Col lege have worked together to cre ate this kind of a conference." The conference will focus on "Building Spiritual Community." The weekend will feature topical discussion groups, worship-shar ing, service projects, a concert, and opportunities for informal gather A few Guilford alumni also wrote in, greatly strengthening the nomination. "I was particularly honored by the number of Guilford people who invested their time, and I feel very supported by my colleagues," reflected Stoneburner. "This is a great job, very exciting, and it was nice to be honored." Twenty-five years of service to Guilford College... fifteen years coteaching with her husband... a successful Women's Studies pro gram which can now be a major... much-needed support for young Guilford faculty. The Commission on the Status of Women believed that Carol Stoneburner merited recognition for these things, and so did a number of Guilford faculty. ing and relaxation. The students who attend will work together in many different ways. They will be doing small group work as well as large group work. The big day is Saturday, when all students will expected to participate in a work project. Two special guests will help in making this an exciting weekend. The first is Bruce Bishop, Young Adult Friends director Of North west Yearly Meeting, who will be a resource leader for the weekend. On Saturday night, the group will also get a chance to hear the music group 'The Kry" perform. "The Kry" is a group of Christian music artists invited to share their religious music with these college students.
