Dragging them selves out of bed in the wake of the morning hours. The ground still drenched with dew as they run their laps and pay their dues. It was late afternoon when I went to pay a visit. The sun was low in the sky, but the heat still penetrated, weighing everyone (P 1 ! v ®S 41m* yk * ' -4ot ' .*•} ••; ;"? •*• • .-1 ' * ' ~ -JMt. "Get everything you can out of every thing we do!" bellowed Forrest the assistant coach at the myriad of hustling bodies running drill after drill. With only four days until their opening game against Baldwin Wallace on September 4th, the Guilford women's soccer team is beaming with anticipation over the beginning of their new season. With twelve new players and nine returning veterans, one would think the dynamics of the team might be slightly askew because of their inexperience with each other as a squad. Yet over and over the players assure me that what they have is a very good team with a lot of talent. On his third season as the women's soccer coach, Ken Glardon remarked, "This is a pretty exciting year. These are definitely the strongest players ties, this team provides grounds for optimism. Coach Glardon hopes this will help to take his team all the way. Led by team captains Janet Jackson and Alison Schott, there is an overwhelming theme of en thusiasm within this crew. "I'm havin' a great time. I think we're awesome" commented freshman Mario Biernacki. "We have a lot of talent out here and a lot of teams Sports aiming high are going to be really shocked when they see us on the field!" exclaimed, senior Joanna Hill. "This Team Rocks!" announced, senior Michelle Mac Peek. As I sat in the warm late af ternoon sun watching the end of practice scrimmage between the shirts and the pennies, I was sur prised at how much action was tak ing place. There was a lot of talk ing and interaction between the players, not to mention some re ally good movement offensively and defensively. The ball-handling skills of the new and old players alike were impressive and there were more shots on goal than I've seen from a Guilford team in a while. The pace was intense and there was good speed and a lot of hustling. It looked as if this team with their large influx of fresh tal ent was going to plow their way to the mighty ODAC finals in style. since I've been here. Plenty of depth." With high as p i ra tions for his new crop, Coach Glardon is ai re ady looking to wards the OD AC finals and hosting the first round.
