The women played well but the Yellow Jackets, fresh off a win over eighteenth-ranked Method ist, defeated the home squad 3 to Sports l. The game was marked by a few lapses on Guilford's part, which Baldwin Wallace was quick to capitalize on. Head coach Ken Glardon remarked, "We came out and played tentatively at first. That allowed Baldwin Wallace to dictate the pace of the game early. The girls gave it a good effort, it just didn't happen for us today." Assistant coach Forrest Collier agreed, saying "We played well for 89 of the 90 minutes. We made a few mental errors which led to goals for the other team. Mistakes like those should be come less common as the season progresses." The first period ended at 1- 0, Baldwin Wallace, but the Lady Quakers came out and began to play more aggressively, culminat ing in a score by forward Ingrid Werge at 22:40 of the second pe riod. That would be all of the scoring for Guilford that day, though, as Baldwin Wallace re grouped and began to control the ball, getting off some good shots. First-year goalkeeper Jenny Akman made some sparkling saves, but the Yellow Jackets of fense proved to be too much. Two more shots found the back of the net during the third period, end ing the match at 3-1. Werge seemed pleased with the team's overall effort, but noted that the players are still adjusting to one another, saying "We have a lot of talent, it just takes a little time for everything to come together." The player of the game for Guilford was senior Alison Schott. She was moved from the midfield to play marking back and effec tively shut down Baldwin Wallace's all-time leading goal scorer, Jodi Klauminzer. The Lady Quakers' next home game is Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. against Emory & Henry. Senior Luisella Perri was adamant in encouraging students to come out and support the team. "There was a nice crowd today, but it could always be big ger. Please come out and cheer us on." The women's soccer team spent the weekend at the Sewanee Invitational. They defeated Principia on Saturday, 4-1 and Sewanee 2-1 on Sunday to win the tournament. A game summary should appear in the next issue of The Guilfordian. 15
