The GuUfordian September 26,1997 Parents' Weekend judged a success ♦Parents and students alike seem to enjoy all of the weekend's planned activities BY ANDREW BELL Staff Writer Images of arrival day echoed around campus two weekends ago as fami lies tumbled out of cars from long drives to greet their college students. Guilford rolled out the maroon carpet on Satur day for Parents' Weekend as moms, dads, siblings, friends, and pets arrived to see how their students were enjoying collegiate life. A continuous theme for Saturday's planned events was dining set to music. The shows began with mood music from a jazz band lightening the atmosphere at an outside brunch buffet. Not con tent to stop at tables set with linen and candles, the col lege also threw in a string ensemble UNION VOX ♦Homecoming, Celebration Station and other events BY JENN WINGO Union President This past weekend we had our second concert, Zion Wave. News played for over two hours total, with Sternberger auditorium grow ing only more crowded as the show progressed. Freshman parent Nedra Rob erts could not help but notice the base of creativity and talent present in Guilford's student body. "These kids really do have enor mous talent, and not just a few, but all of them," she said. Indeed, variety acts began to sprout up piecemeal Saturday, as one sibling to a new student spon taneously brought out fire batons and performed a flaming juggling act in Bryan's courtyard. There was no shortage of ac tivities to participate in as parents eagerly sized up this place which their children call home. Oded Pines, father to Adam Pines 'Ol, appreciated this oppor tunity to get a feel for what his son is doing each day. "I was glad to attend the dorm and seminar meetings, as they helped me to un derstand Adam's world. Also, I could keep my ear to the ground and hear of any mischief to which my son might be party." Spectator events also occurred throughout Parents' Weekend. The campus cheered in support as our Quaker football team dropped a hard-fought loss and the Women's rugby team pulled off a tie against Elon College in a scrimmage game. But most who saw it consid ered the Second Hand Dance Com pany to be the grand finale of the weekend. Alicia Grogan-Brown 'Ol said "Those three guys were in credible. The balancing feats they performed and the routine with the velcro hats....it was just hysteri cal." The audience at this show was beyond captivated; in all serious ness, they were hooked and looped. Parents' Weekend wrapped up on Sunday the sixteenth as stu dents bid their families goodbye and helped load them in their cars to return home. The affair was widely regarded as a success, though universally acknowledged as very taxing. Now that we have gotten our yearly dose of the pa rental participatory college expe rience, we return to the volume of work that we grudgingly ignored to hobnob with our friends and families.
